What Is Truth?
CGG Weekly by Richard T. RitenbaughThe greatest challenge facing mankind is distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda. Perceiving the truth has always been a struggle, but in this age of overwhelming information, it takes on a special urgency. Daily, we must decide whether the threats we face are real, whether proposed solutions will do any good, and whether the problems we are told exist are genuine or fabricated. Our struggle to determine what is true is the struggle to discern which of our perceptions are authentic and which are false, influenced by society, our emotions, or our hopes and fears. Like Pontius Pilate, who questioned the nature of truth while navigating the complexities of Roman and Jewish politics, we face a similar challenge in a sophisticated world where perception often matters more than reality. Clever individuals can manipulate these perceptions to gain power. Our task is compounded by a deluge of information, far surpassing the limited news Pilate received, yet human nature remains unchanged, with dishonesty and trickery persisting among those who supply information. We must discern facts amidst marketing, propaganda, spin, and disinformation, ferreting out motives, uncovering fallacies, and weighing probabilities. This is no easy task, but constant practice in making such evaluations sharpens our ability to separate truth from deception in a myriad of instances.
The Whole Truth
'Ready Answer' by John O. ReidThe struggle for truth is a pervasive challenge in our world, where the whole truth is often obscured by partial admissions or desires to appear favorable. Adam and Eve exemplified this when they deflected blame for their disobedience, hiding their true motivations—Adam to please his wife, and Eve to gain wisdom. This tendency to avoid the complete truth causes immense suffering, as the world often rejects available truth. Cultural messages, like those promoting illicit sex, present a partial truth of excitement while omitting the ensuing guilt, stress, harm, and potential devastation such as disease, unwanted pregnancy, or ruined futures. Submitting to God's truth requires personal effort and often engenders a struggle, as His guidance through the Holy Spirit does not compel action but prompts us to apply truth ourselves. God may repeatedly place us in situations to learn necessary changes, yet the decision to submit remains ours. This struggle is evident in financial decisions, where desires conflict with God's principles against debt, urging us to weigh needs versus wants and act prudently. In worship, truth is paramount, demanding a life aligned with God's character beyond mere rituals, reflecting His ways in every facet of existence. Practically, embracing truth means rejecting all falsehood and hypocrisy, reflecting honesty in all interactions. Truth builds and encourages, while falsehood destroys faith and trust. Acknowledging God in all endeavors, not just in crises, integrates His truth into daily living, fostering a path directed by Him. Jesus Christ affirms that abiding in His word reveals truth that liberates from wrong living and worldly ways, preparing us for the Kingdom of God. This liberation and transformation provide compelling motivation to seek and apply truth, despite the struggle it entails.
