Believers likewise occupy a narrow position where they must hold ground against relentless assaults. Victory requires faith in Christ's doctrines and trust in Him as Captain, paired with a good conscience formed by obedience so that orders are followed without hesitation. Endurance is essential because enlistment lasts until death, with hardship accepted as the normal duty of a soldier who has chosen to lose his life for the cause rather than capitulate. Dedication and focus prevent any gap in the line that subtle enemies can exploit, since Satan and his allies test defenses constantly and renew attacks after each repulse. The full armor of God supplies the needed equipment, yet strength comes from the Lord's power rather than personal resources, enabling the soldier to withstand in the evil day and remain standing after every assault. Like Leonidas' three hundred or Esther's solitary approach to the king, the disciple must count the cost, refuse surrender, and willingly sacrifice all to remain faithful. Standing shield to shield with Christ and fellow believers fulfills the call to occupy the gap, repel every wave, and prove loyal to the end.

Satan has invisibly swayed the nations for nearly six thousand years, guiding governments, influencing civilizations, possessing leaders, and inspiring wars that produce hate, misery, and violent death. He has hindered mankind since Adam and Eve disobeyed God, acting as accuser, adversary, and attacker who continues to obstruct submission and devotion to the Father and His Son. The question of rule over the earth has already been settled because Jesus Christ overcame Satan and will remove him, yet believers today must confront the field of battle rather than remain in a defensive holding pattern. The entire state of life in this world, especially the difficulty of living God's way amid near-complete saturation by evil in media, entertainment, politics, education, and every sphere, makes the fight of faith strenuous. This warfare is not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this age, and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Satan operates regionally through rulers who govern territories, authorities who shape values such as self-first philosophy and materialism, and powers that control what people think and do, including forces behind visible figures. These spiritual forces are wicked and destructive, and they promote a post-truth era in which error and evil advance. Believers must therefore be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, then put on the whole armor of God to stand against the devil's schemes. The armor supplies both defensive protection and the offensive sword of the Spirit, enabling proactive resistance rather than mere standing still, which leads to backward movement. Human strength alone proves insufficient, as even sinless Adam and Eve fell to Satan's wiles and all subsequent saints have failed without God's power. Victory requires reliance on Christ's inherent might, demonstrated in His temptation, crucifixion, and resurrection where He disarmed principalities and powers. Through this strength the saints learn to fight spiritually now and will fight alongside Christ at His return, when Satan and his demons are cast into restraint so that mankind may at last be made at one with God.
