You Deceitful Tongue!
Commentary by Martin G. CollinsThere is not a good end for those who lie, whether they are journalists or any human being in the world. Truth is single in its direction and consistency, whereas a lie jumps all over the place and has different meanings. There is only one way of telling the truth but many ways of lying. We tell the truth completely naturally, yet we lie in countless different ways as we assume the different personalities of each lie. To become a more effective human lie detector, determine if the story fits into a context and follows a sequence from A to Z that makes sense, as lies often do not. Probe and push the story; if it starts to wobble, you have your answer. Develop alertness to the speaker's baseline truth-telling mannerisms, noting the one way they tell the truth, and watch for any departures from this baseline. Each of us must question the shortcomings of all news and information, place confidence only where it is earned, and absolutely trust only the Word of God, which is wisdom from above, to avoid being taken for a ride with the lies that surround us.
National False Witness
CGG Weekly by John O. ReidIn this fallen age, deceit permeates every level of society, from the individual to the highest institutions. The news media, trusted to report the truth without bias, has betrayed that trust by making evil appear good and good appear evil. Yet, the problem of lying is not confined to organizations or government; it is also an individual failing. Many, while claiming to value truth, readily tell lies, both small and significant, as seen in everyday encounters where deceit is used for personal gain or to evade consequences. The Scriptures reveal the dire state of truth at the end times, describing a people whose lips speak lies and whose tongues mutter perversity, where no one calls for justice or pleads for truth, leading to the failure of truth itself. Deceit has become so normalized that it is accepted as a way of life, expected and even participated in unconsciously by many. As God's people, we must guard against taking truth lightly, for God condemns lying in the Ten Commandments and ranks liars among the worst of men. A lying tongue and a false witness are abominations to Him, while those who speak truth from their heart will dwell on His holy hill. The source of lying is Satan the Devil, who introduced deceit where none existed before, aiming to cause confusion, division, rebellion, heartache, and to lead God's people into sin. His pattern is to destroy all that God is doing. When we lie, even in small ways, we imitate him, often doing so to gain an advantage, protect our pride, appear superior, or cover up flaws. In a world steeped in deception, it is easy to fall into the habit of shading or obscuring the truth to present ourselves favorably, but we must resist this for any reason. Paul urges us to put away lying and speak truth with one another, fostering trust and unity. While we are not obligated to answer every question or reveal all we know, we must discern whether withholding information stems from a selfish desire to deceive for personal benefit. Inundated by a culture of deceit, we struggle to imagine a time when only truth will be spoken, yet Revelation warns that those who love and practice lying will not enter the Kingdom of God. As lights in this world, we represent that godly society of truth, making it our priority to repudiate the way of Satan and bear the image of God before the world by speaking truth and keeping our word.
Everything Is A Lie
Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)Deceit permeates every corner of our society, making it nearly impossible to discern the truth amidst a cacophony of lies. The fraudulent use of Dr. Walter Williams' name to lend credibility to an article on voting patterns exemplifies this pervasive dishonesty, as the author sought to exploit another's reputation for personal gain. In the realm of commerce, health food products falsely claim to be raw, while in reality, they are pasteurized, deceiving consumers who trust the labels. Similarly, knockoff items tied to major events like the Super Bowl mislead buyers with false associations. In the financial sector, a grave fraud known as robo-signing, practiced since the late 1990s by five major Wall Street institutions within a shadowy, unregulated banking system, has clouded the titles of millions of American homes. This deceitful practice involved employees signing documents with false names and titles, attesting to unverified content, purely to expedite processes and increase profits, while defiling property rights. The government's response appears to be yet another layer of deception, crafting a settlement to shield these institutions from accountability, mirroring past bailouts that protected the guilty at public expense. Fraud, defined as deliberate deception for unfair or unlawful gain, is a cancer within the nation, one sin begetting another. As God warns in Jeremiah 9:3-6, the people of Judah bent their tongues for lies, proceeding from evil to evil, refusing to know Him through their deceit. He counsels vigilance, urging all to beware of neighbors and brothers alike, for deceit surrounds and corrupts, a testament to the influence of the prince of the power of the air, a liar and the father of liars.
