The Offerings of Leviticus (Part Five): The Peace Offering, Sacrifice, and Love

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

Sacrifice is the essence of love, reflecting the profound dedication required to maintain relationships with God and fellow man. The difficult part lies in laying ourselves out in sacrifice to express this love, for without such commitment, solutions to relationship problems may remain unseen. Loving one's brother, as defined by keeping God's commandments in relation to him, brings illumination and stability, enabling one to see in the dark and avoid stumbling. Conversely, failing to sacrifice for others, even for parents or close family, can lead to contempt and a lack of peace, hindering a sense of well-being for all involved. Our part in striving for purity and communion with God involves following the example of Jesus Christ's thorough dedication, showing our understanding of faith, love, and sacrifice. God has invested greatly to provide this fellowship for us, and the least we can do is offer back to Him our full devotion as a living sacrifice.

Love's Basic Definition

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Sacrifice is the essence of love, a fundamental principle that requires a cost to the one who loves. Love, as exemplified by God, always involves giving up something, whether minor or of great personal value, for the well-being of another, even someone disliked. This costliness is a vital part of love, evident in the actions of God and mirrored in the lives of His children through similar acts of self-giving for the benefit of others. The supreme act of love is seen in God giving His Son, a profound sacrifice that sets the standard for all acts of love. This standard is not limited to a single event but encompasses the entire life of Jesus Christ, who spent Himself for mankind in every deed. He became poor though He was rich, humbled Himself, and subjected Himself to human frailties, providing a measure against which all acts of love are compared. On a daily basis, we are called to make costly payments in acts of love, reflecting this divine example. Love's requirement of sacrifice is illustrated in the account of David, who refused to offer a sacrifice to God that cost him nothing. True love, as David understood, involves personal cost, not relying on the expense of another. Thus, the love of God inherently demands a willingness to bear a burden, to pay a price, ensuring that the act is genuine and reflective of divine nature.

No Greater Love

'Ready Answer' by Staff

Sacrifice is the essence of love, reflecting a profound dedication to others. Just as Jesus Christ laid down His life, we are called to devote ourselves to our friends, fellow members of God's church, and ultimately to God the Father and Jesus Christ. True friendship and love manifest in the total giving of our lives to others, as Jesus instructs in John 13:34-35 to love one another as He has loved us. By this love, all will recognize us as His disciples. Beyond the willingness to face physical death, as exemplified by figures like Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-Nego, Daniel, and the apostle Paul, we must also lay down our old, sinful lives daily. This means allowing our former selves to be crucified with Christ and living brand-new lives, letting Jesus Christ live through us in loving service to others. The ultimate question is not merely whether we would give our physical life for our friends or for God, but whether we are sacrificing our lives for them each day. Greater love has no one than this.
