The Gift of Eternal Life

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Martin G. Collins

We, as the firstfruits of the Spirit, are the first to be spiritually adopted into God's Family and the first to receive eternal life, associating this redemption of our body with the gift of eternal life which we eagerly await. Eternal life, as a divine gift from God, is not merely about longevity but about the quality and character of life found in His Son. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son; whoever has the Son has life, and whoever does not have the Son does not have life. This gift of eternal life is an undeserved present possession, emphasizing the divine nature of the life we receive through faith in Christ, not something earned or achievable by human effort. Eternal life is the life of God Himself, shared with us here and now, bringing peace, power, holiness, love, and indestructibility. It means serenity, liberating us from fears and granting inner tranquility through reconciliation with God. It signifies the defeat of frustration, filling us with God's power to triumph over circumstances. It embodies the defeat of sin through God's transcendent purity, separating us from worldly infections. It heralds the end of bitterness and hatred, infusing us with God's love at our core. Finally, it ensures the defeat of death, offering an indestructible life sustained by God's eternal nature. This eternal life comes only through Jesus Christ, the sole revealer of God and the way to abide in Him. It demands absolute allegiance and self-surrender, requiring undivided loyalty and full-hearted obedience to Christ. The testimony of God is that He gave us eternal life through His Son, a promise fulfilled in the hearts of those who believe and follow Him. Eternal life is fellowship with the Father and His Son, a superior quality of life promised to us as potential firstfruits of the Kingdom of God.

Do You Really Want Just Any Eternal Life?

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

Eternal life, as a gift from God, is a central promise for those who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. This life is not merely about endless duration but embodies a divine character and quality, reflecting the very life of God Himself. God has given us eternal life through His Son, and this life resides in Him alone; whoever has the Son has life, and whoever does not have the Son does not have life. The purpose of the testimony concerning Jesus Christ is to inspire faith, leading to the reception of this eternal life as a free gift, which includes fellowship with God through Christ. This eternal life signifies a profound transformation, marked by peace that liberates from fear, power that defeats frustration, holiness that overcomes sin, love that ends bitterness and hatred, and an indestructible life that triumphs over death. It is a life of serenity, victory over circumstances, transcendent purity, unending care from God, and union with Him for all eternity. Eternal life is not to be confused with mere natural existence; it is a spiritual life, a birth from above, dependent on receiving Christ as Savior. The way to this life is through faith, sparked by the testimony of God about His Son, with the assurance that those who believe can know they possess eternal life now and forever. This life, abiding in us through Jesus Christ, offers a present certainty of the divine quality dwelling within. God's promise of eternal life is a call to absolute allegiance and self-surrender to Christ, emphasizing not just adherence to commandments but a complete commitment to following Him. Through His Son, God offers not just a longer life, but a superior quality of eternal life, pictured as the ultimate goal for the firstfruits of His Kingdom.
