The Importance of God's Word
Commentary by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)God's Word, when feared and respected, serves as a restraining force against unbridled carnality. Without respect for His Word, people run wild, casting off restraint, becoming ungovernable, and allowing law and order to disappear. Those who remain faithful to the instruction of God and His Word are blessed. God's Word, particularly the Laws codified within it, works to restrain individuals and collectively a society from the excesses of rampant carnality. When respected and obeyed, God's Word is a positive good in any culture or society. As a people lose sight of God's Word as His revelation to them, they witness their nation becoming less governed by law and more by political opportunists in the name of expediency. Such a people, lacking the immutable standards of God's Law in His Word, become easy prey for the flattering lies of the man of sin.
Do We Truly Honor God in Our Actions?
Sermon by Kim MyersGod declares that His Word is essential for training and discipline, and it must be used for doctrine. He calls us to be doers of His Word, for merely hearing it without putting it into practice is futile. As firstfruits, we are urged to live by every Word that comes from the mouth of God, striving to apply it in our lives. Many among God's people, however, fail to follow His instructions, not just in occasional missteps, but as a way of life. On the Sabbath, some choose personal pleasures or neglect assembling together, despite God's emphasis on its importance, mentioned numerous times in His Word. We must endeavor to keep the Sabbath holy, honoring His command rather than pursuing our own desires. Regarding the Feast of Tabernacles, God instructs us to save second tithe to attend, ensuring we are prepared without incurring debt. Failing to save leads to financial strain and hinders generosity at the Feast, while following His way brings blessings and freedom from debt. God also commands us to assemble where He places His name, yet some refuse, choosing to meet informally or stream services, contrary to His will. In matters of relationships, God warns against becoming unequally yoked, as it often leads to compromise or conflict, potentially drawing us away from His path. He desires our happiness and protection from such struggles, emphasizing that His laws are for our good. God's Word guides family roles, instructing wives to willingly obey their husbands and husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the church. Yet, this must not become oppressive control, but a balanced relationship reflecting mutual respect and care, as seen in the freedom and responsibility of the Proverbs 31 woman. Following His Word in family life brings blessings and harmony. In raising children, God teaches that proper correction, when needed, is an act of love, contrary to the world's view. Neglecting this responsibility can lead to ongoing issues, while applying His guidance early fosters obedience and respect, yielding long-term benefits. As God's people, we bear a great responsibility to live by every Word of God, not reasoning contrary to His truth or justifying rebellion. His ways are for our well-being, and striving to follow them brings wisdom, better marriages, obedient children, and countless blessings. We must guard against deception and commit to being doers of His Word.
