Unsheathe Your Sword! (Part One)
'Ready Answer' by Pat HigginsIn the spiritual warfare we face, our true battle is not against external foes but against our carnal nature, which, if unchecked, becomes fertile ground for satan's attacks and worldly temptations. Losing these battles risks stunting our spiritual growth, weakening our connection with God, and succumbing to sin. Our greatest enemy lies within us—our own heart and mind that must be transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ. The Bible serves as our active weapon in this spiritual fight, offering a comprehensive arsenal of offensive and defensive strategies to wield against our carnal minds and hearts. Following the example of our Savior, we see that Christ countered every thrust of satan with the perfect strike from the Word of God, His spiritual sword always ready with skillful responses. As Christian soldiers, we must emulate Him, using the scriptures powerfully and courageously in our daily struggles. Human nature, left unguarded, is defenseless against the assaults of satan and the world. To bring every thought and intent into obedience to Christ, we must respond immediately with the Word of God, as He did, drawing from a mind filled with divine truth rather than human inclination. Memorizing scriptures implants these life-giving words into our souls, equipping us to win battles and save our souls through their application. As warriors, we are called to conquer our carnal nature, understanding that even small choices reflect our commitment to God's way. Wielding the sword of the Word clarifies our stand before God, forcing us to choose His path over enslavement to sin. The process involves identifying the battleground, unsheathing the sword to apply godly responses, memorizing verses to keep them sharp, and deciding to use them with faith and courage. This effort demonstrates our dedication to God and His way of life. Yet, possessing the sword is not enough; we must choose to deploy it, overcoming the fear of what it costs to slay the self in a life-and-death struggle where only one can survive. God commands us to have courage, assuring us of His presence and power to win the battle. By memorizing verses, we replace our thoughts with Christ's, ensuring His guidance is at the forefront of our decisions, directing our steps and reducing sin. Christ, having given all to secure us, calls us to sacrifice our old self. We must learn to use and keep sharp the sword of the Word, taking it into every battle to conquer our carnal nature and live with Him eternally. We know the enemy and the battlefield, and we have our weapon at hand.
Warfare!
Sermon by John O. ReidIn the spiritual warfare that confronts us, we are engaged in a total war requiring full mobilization of our resources to achieve victory. Our fight is unique, distinct from the conflicts of the world. The weapons we wield are not those of human conflict, such as machine guns or atomic bombs, nor are they the deceitful tactics of satan, like lying, gossiping, or intimidation. Instead, our weapons are divine, designed to transform us into a new creation. These spiritual weapons, as described, are meant to cast down false arguments and lies that oppose God, bringing our minds and thoughts into obedience to Christ. They include the teachings of God, aimed at producing a profound change within us that the world cannot comprehend. We are to wrap ourselves completely in the armor of God, immersing ourselves in it with the intent to stand victorious in the fiercest battles. Our arsenal comprises truth, righteousness, integrity, holiness, and purity of life. We are to live by every word of truth, resisting satan's deceptive broadcasts and reining in our desires based on that truth. We must fight the pressures of the world, striving to live in perfect righteousness. Additionally, we are to be shod with the gospel of peace, proclaiming this message through our way of living, demonstrating peace in a world filled with hatred and war. Further elements of our spiritual armor include the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation which focuses on the hope and promise of victory, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. This offensive weapon, used by Jesus Christ Himself against satan, counters the lies and deceptions of the world with God's truth. Constant prayer is essential, supporting us and our fellow soldiers to persevere and triumph in this spiritual battle.

Unsheathe Your Sword! (Part Two)
'Ready Answer' by Pat HigginsIn the spiritual war we are engaged in, we must recognize ourselves as soldiers of Jesus Christ, called to conquer and overcome. Our battle is not for physical life but for spiritual life and death, with the promise of sonship and eternal life to those who prevail. To equip ourselves, we wield a powerful weapon: the Word of God. Memorizing Scripture becomes our sword, enabling us to internalize the mind of Christ and be ready to repel any attack by drawing from His resources. As Christ demonstrated in His encounters with the devil, precision in using only the necessary portion of a verse sharpens our effectiveness in battle. We must focus on specific battles, selecting Scriptures that address particular obstacles or thought patterns we aim to replace with Christ's mind. Visualization, akin to mental rehearsal used by elite warriors, aids in preparing for challenges by meditating on how Christ would respond with spiritual weapons. Through daily systems of prayer, memorization, and review, we reinforce our spiritual foundation, aligning our thoughts with Christ's and ensuring our arsenal of verses remains ready for immediate use. Memorization also empowers our prayers, allowing us to boldly approach God with requests aligned with His will. As soldiers, our training through prayer, study, fasting, and meditation, including memorization, prepares us to face increasing spiritual assaults and to stand firm in battle.
