Stalked by Satan
'Ready Answer' by Mike FordBe sober, be vigilant; for your adversary the devil prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Like a lion, he operates under the cover of darkness, using deception as his camouflage, blending invisibly into the surroundings to stalk his prey. His senses are sharp, his vision keen in the night, allowing him to see us when we are unaware of his presence. As lions hunt within a territory with their pride, he and his forces roam, targeting the weak, the weary, and those who stray from the herd. When he strikes, he inflicts great pain, pinning down his victims and wounding them before the final blow, prolonging their suffering. Yet, even in his grasp, there is hope, for the LORD is near to all who call upon Him, hearing their cry and saving them. Think of him as a lion, silently and invisibly stalking, always seeking to isolate and attack when least expected. Let this imagery keep you alert to his devices.
The Cunning of Satan
Sermon by Kim MyersIn this ongoing war that began at our baptism and persists every moment of our lives, we face a cunning adversary, satan, who employs subtle and deceptive tactics to lead us astray. God warns us through His Word that there is a spirit world, and part of it is our enemy, with satan and his demons seeking to destroy us both spiritually and physically. We must be vigilant, for satan's primary weapon is words, which he uses with great patience and craftiness, just as he did in the initial rebellion among the angels, slowly corrupting them through mere speech until many turned against God. Satan's methods remain unchanged since those early times; he used words to deceive Eve, planting doubt with questions like, "Has God really said?" and mixing lies with partial truths to convince her that eating the forbidden fruit would make her wise and powerful like God. This process of deception through words took time, possibly months or years, starting as thoughts and justifications in the mind before becoming actions that lead to sin. Similarly, satan attacked Christ after His baptism, when He was in a weakened state from fasting, tempting Him with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, yet Christ defeated him using the words of God as His armor. Satan's attacks often come when we are most vulnerable, weakened by attitudes, sickness, financial or marital problems, or other trials, striking with words that sow doubt and partial truths to mislead us. These attacks can emerge from within the church itself, through wolves in sheep's clothing or brethren and ministry who deceive with spoken words, as seen in past deceptions that spiritually harmed many of God's called. Such deception starts small, like leaven spreading through dough, beginning with seemingly insignificant ideas that grow into greater error and sin if unchecked. God instructs us not to be ignorant of satan's devices, for he roams seeking whom he may deceive and destroy. Satan's words corrupt minds, turning thoughts into actions that become sin, and he is so cunning that, if God allowed, even the elect could be deceived. Our defense lies in the armor of God, which is nothing more than prayer and Bible study, equipping us with God's words to counter satan's lies. Christ's example shows us how to wield this armor, defeating satan in a vulnerable state with the power of God's Word, and we must follow suit by knowing and using these words daily to protect ourselves from deception and spiritual death.
Satan (Part 4)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughSatan's devices are cunningly designed to manipulate us through disinformation and the distortion of our attitudes, aiming to steer our reasoning toward self-satisfaction. This focus on self over God and others is the essence of sin, which is his ultimate goal. Known as the prince of the power of the air, his influence often operates indirectly, permeating the atmosphere with his spirit to which we are naturally attuned. Tuning him out is the only defense, though recognizing his influence is challenging since yielding to it feels natural, having been ingrained in us since birth. His manipulations bear fruit in confusion, division, and warfare, evident in personal lives, institutions, and cultures. Even when we fail to notice his influence in the act of sin, the resulting fruit eventually reveals his work. Originating from vanity over his own beauty and abilities, his rebellion began with a lie he told himself, believing he deserved more than what God had given. This lie fueled his discontent, leading him to deceive other angels into feeling mistreated, ultimately resulting in division and warfare against God. Satan's effectiveness as a deceiver persists, capable of leading people astray even after long periods of divine governance. His tools are numerous, exploiting our vulnerabilities through subtle lies, as seen in the case of Ananias and Sapphira, who were moved to lie for self-satisfaction, resulting in their separation from God's church and life itself. Similarly, he tempted Peter with disinformation, leading him to oppose God's purpose for Christ by suggesting a path of Messiahship without suffering, a deviation from God's will. In various life circumstances, such as government, employment, and marriage, satan seeks to stir feelings of being taken advantage of, pushing us toward rebellion and self-satisfaction rather than submission to God's will. He prowls like a roaring lion, targeting the strays—those who separate from the group under the weight of problems—exploiting emotions over truth. Through false prophets and cunning deceit, he smuggles in destructive heresies that appear harmless but undermine spiritual health, aiming for personal gain over truth. Within congregations, his influence manifests as confusion, division, and infighting, marked by self-justifying pride rather than the meekness and love of God's Spirit. He moves us toward self-centeredness, the true opposite of love, leading to withdrawal from fellowship through gossip, accusations, and trivial grievances. His persistent aim is to drive us toward self-indulgence at the expense of God and others, a direction we must vigilantly resist by denying ourselves and sanctifying God in our hearts.
