Idolatrous Suppressors of the Truth
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsLittle children, keep yourselves from idols. The apostle John, in his deep concern for the spiritual well-being of believers, warns against the dangers of idolatry, which threatens to come between us and the knowledge of the true and living God. This enemy, the evil one, actively seeks to divert our minds, attention, and hearts to other things, making idolatry one of the greatest threats in our spiritual life. Idolatry stems from self-centeredness and rebelliousness, as people refuse to surrender themselves to worship God as He commands. Without His Spirit, human nature attempts to confine God to physical objects or images, fabricating idols, icons, or symbols to aid in worshipping a god of their own making. An idol is anything that occupies the place that should be reserved for God alone, anything that holds our devotion, seems vital, or controls us. It can be anything we live by or depend on rather than God, anything that obsessively moves, attracts, or stimulates us. When God is not the supreme figure in our lives, whatever controls us becomes an idol. The world often lacks the understanding of true worship, turning to material objects or systems, driven by fear and self-preservation, instead of seeking God first. This subtle danger can infiltrate even the faithful, as we may worship our own ideas, religious observances, or experiences, placing self above God. John's warning is practical and broad, addressing not just literal idols of silver, gold, or stone, but the spirit of idolatry—obsessions, misdirected passions, and false ideas. In a pagan society, the temptation to return to such practices was real, yet the deeper concern was for spiritual unfaithfulness, akin to religious adultery. Idolatry, whether through physical representations or mental constructs, is an abomination to God, who refuses to share His praise with false gods or human inventions. It is rooted in the heart and mind, manifesting as stubbornness, rebellion, and disobedience, and it carries severe consequences if not repented of. To combat this, we must guard ourselves as if in a defense force against idolatry, realizing that we are not of this world and must not live for or worship anything that belongs to it. We are to remember that idols are useless and worthless, unworthy of our devotion, as nothing material is lasting or eternal. God calls us to worship Him directly, in humility, sincerity, and truth, rather than through any idol or substitute. Our purpose is to walk in His way of life, to know Him through obedience and experience, and to fellowship with Him and His Son Jesus Christ.
