Tolerance and Love

CGG Weekly by John W. Ritenbaugh

For the past twenty-five years, tolerance has been a powerful theme among secular advocates of political correctness and those influenced by New Age movements. It has also permeated mainstream-Protestant congregations and, more recently, evangelical circles. However, the tolerance preached publicly is not found in Scripture except in very narrow circumstances. The word tolerance does not appear in older Bible versions like the King James or American Standard, as translators found no fitting context for it before 1960. Later versions, such as the New International Version and New American Standard Version, include it in fewer than five places, while older translations used terms like forbearance, endurance, patience, and long-suffering, which better suit those contexts. Tolerance, in common usage today, refers to enduring hardship or pain, putting up with objectionable persons or opinions, and recognizing or respecting others' beliefs or practices. While these definitions are not inherently objectionable to a Christian, the modern twist on tolerance—promoting acceptance on an equal level rather than mere forbearance—creates significant challenges. In a multicultural world, Christians face diversity in every aspect of society, from employment to entertainment, where worldly beliefs and practices often stand against the principles of God's way of life. Many of these beliefs and practices are anti-Christ, permeating governments, schooling, and other cultural spheres with concepts drawn from false religions or secularism. The modern interpretation of tolerance as equal acceptance often leads to accusations of lacking love if one does not conform to this standard. Yet, can a Christian truly accept paganism or other teachings influenced by falsehoods as equal to the truth of God's creation and His moral absolutes? God's commands, as seen in His instructions to the Israelites to destroy evil and avoid intermingling with those who would lead them astray, show no tolerance for such compromise. His actions reflect an overwhelming love for His people by protecting them from corruption. Christians are urged not to be deceived by this modern, sugar-coated tolerance of sinful paganism and must stand firm against accepting such concepts in their lives.

Sermonette by Ronny H. Graham

Tolerating perversion in our midst will attract the wrath of Almighty God. Tolerance of evil out of political correctness is not an option for us.

Today's Brand of Tolerance

Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Over the past 25 years, tolerance has emerged as a dominant theme among those promoting politically correct messages in secular spheres. This concept, however, is scarce in older biblical translations, appearing less than five times even in modern versions, as earlier texts favored terms like forbearance, endurance, patience, and longsuffering. Tolerance, defined as the capacity to endure hardship or pain, often mental stress from others' objectionable opinions or disrespect, is not inherently contrary to Christian values. Yet, a modern twist on tolerance by influencers in government, media, and academia, who push a progressive social agenda, has altered its meaning. To them, tolerance now demands acceptance on an equal level, regardless of differing practices, and failure to comply is labeled as a lack of love, sometimes leading to punishment. This redefined tolerance challenges believers, as it pressures them to accept practices contrary to God's standards, such as paganism or other religious writings on par with God's Word, which cannot be reconciled with faith. Examples of this skewed tolerance abound: students are reprimanded for respectful references to God in personal work or for reading the Bible during free time, while irreverent uses of God's name in media go unpunished. Furthermore, individuals upholding God's laws by refusing services that conflict with their beliefs face legal penalties and fines, driven by spite to advance a humanist agenda. Conversely, intolerance against God's standards, such as rejecting biblical roles or beliefs, is often praised in public forums. This brand of tolerance operates solely in an anti-God direction, shaped to justify satan's designs without opposition from the unaware, with growing hostility toward those aligned with God's side.
