Many Excuses
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe truth of God's existence is one of the most evident and easily understood realities. From the creation of the world, His invisible attributes, eternal power, and divine nature are clearly seen through the things that are made. Therefore, humanity is without excuse in acknowledging Him. Despite this clear evidence, many suppress the truth in unrighteousness, refusing to glorify Him as God or give thanks. Instead, they become vain in their reasoning, their foolish hearts darkened, professing wisdom yet becoming fools. They exchange the truth of God for a lie, worshiping and serving the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Even though the creation—Earth and life itself—bears powerful testimony to a Designer of intellect, wisdom, and love, they devise theories to justify their denial of a life-giving Creator to whom they must submit. This suppression of truth is an expression of enmity against God, driven by a deceitful heart that lies to itself to ignore the obvious.
Are Humans Becoming More Intelligent? (Part Four)
Commentary by Martin G. CollinsGod created the world in a way that reflects divine wisdom, a pattern discernible to those who earnestly seek it. This wisdom, originating from God Himself, must begin with a proper acknowledgment and reverence for Him. The imprint of this wisdom on Creation is so profound that all who refuse to recognize the testimony of God's existence and power are without excuse. What can be known about God is plain, as He has shown it through the things that have been made, revealing His invisible attributes, eternal power, and divine nature since the creation of the world. Therefore, those who suppress this truth through unrighteousness, though they knew God, fail to honor Him or give thanks, becoming futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts.
Wisdom and Foolishness
Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)Stephen Hawking, in his book *The Grand Design*, asserts that God is unnecessary, claiming that science proves He was not needed for the creation of the universe. Despite admitting that God's existence cannot be disproved, Hawking suggests that the law of gravity allowed the universe to create itself, dismissing the need for a Creator. Such assertions reflect a refusal to acknowledge a greater power, masking intellectual vanity as supreme understanding. In contrast, the concept of design, as implied in Hawking's book title, contradicts the randomness often associated with evolutionary thought, highlighting an inherent inconsistency. God's response to such claims is clear. His wrath is revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth. What can be known about God is plain to them, for He has shown it through His invisible attributes, His eternal power, and divine nature, evident in the creation of the world. These truths have been clearly perceived since the beginning in the things that have been made. God declares that He will destroy the wisdom of the wise and thwart the discernment of the discerning, making foolish the wisdom of the world. Those who deny Him are deliberately suppressing the truth, despite knowing better, as God has ensured they see His existence. They are without excuse, and He will hold them accountable, for He has shown them that He is.
