Addiction and Self-Control
CGG Weekly by Richard T. RitenbaughCountless individuals struggle with addictions to street drugs and pharmaceuticals, caught in a destructive cycle that ruins lives every day. Drug addiction, alongside other dependencies, contributes to mental illnesses, automobile crashes, murders, birth defects, diseases, and other horrible effects, making the world a far harsher place. Governments, charities, and corporations spend billions each year to combat the terrible consequences of these dependencies to which human beings have enslaved themselves. While family history or genetic predisposition may play a role, the addict is still held responsible for each choice to consume another substance, whether by popping a pill, snorting a line, or plunging a needle into their arm. The solution lies in the difficult path of self-control, requiring the seemingly impossible choice to say no to intense cravings, endure withdrawal, and set the will never to surrender to the addiction's allure. God will provide support to His people suffering from addiction if they trust Him and make the right choices, offering power to be stronger than the addiction, love to affirm their worth, and a sound mind to make proper decisions. He will not simply erase the addiction but will help along the arduous and painful process to build the character needed to control urges and reflect His nature.
