When Jesus was asked by the scribe as to which constituted the greatest commandments (Mark 12: 28-31), He stated "you shall love the Lord Your God with all your strength and your neighbor as yourself." When the word "shall" is written into a legal code, it is considered mandatory. There is no connective between the first and second clauses; they cannot be separated. When we examine the four aspects of this contract: 1.) the one responsible, 2.) the one we must love, 3.) the way we are to love, and the action, the responsibility. Each of us individually is the one responsible, which we can personalize by placing our name before each of the behaviors in I Corinthians 13:1-8. The object, the one we must love, constitutes our spiritual siblings, our physical neighbors, strangers, and even our enemies. The way we are to love is the way we care for and nurture our own bodies (Ephesians 5:28-29). The action and responsibility are the agape love of outgoing concern as inherent in the character of Almighty God.
