Knowledge and Wisdom (Part One)

Solomon uses the Hebrew word ḥokmāh in the sense of the right use of knowledge, employing common sense, or skill in living and in relationships with others. Knowledge and understanding form the basis of wisdom, and over time, a person gains experience which, combined with knowledge, provides insight leading to wisdom. In Proverbs 1:2-7, Solomon emphasizes that wisdom and instruction go together, and the wise will hear and increase learning. These proverbs give a young man knowledge and discretion, helping an ordinary person learn to be smart and gain good sense. The very beginning of knowledge, which is essential to gain wisdom, is the fear of the LORD.
