Why Is Christ, the Son, Called 'the Everlasting Father' (Isaiah 9:6)?

Bible Questions & Answers

Isaiah 9:6-7 declares: For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. Jesus Christ of Nazareth is this promised Son, bearing the title Everlasting Father among others. The One called Yahweh in the Old Testament is identified as our Savior and King, Jesus Christ. Deuteronomy 32:6 reveals Him as the Father to Israel, having redeemed them from slavery in Egypt, created them, and founded them as a nation. In Jeremiah 31:9, He affirms His role as Father to Israel in a future time of repentance, leading them with care. His relationship as Father to Israel will endure eternally, truly marking Him as the Everlasting Father.

Why Hebrews Was Written (Part Twelve): The Son's Superiority Over Angels

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

Some Jews among the early converts believed that Jesus Christ did not qualify to be the church's High Priest, considering angels to be greater and holier.

The Angel and the Apostle

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

Hebrews 1-2 establish Christ's superiority over angels, but notably do not mention the Angel of the Lord. Instead, the author handles the Angel differently.

The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

The identical actions of the Lord and the Angel of the Lord show they are the same Being. The God known by Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses was Jesus Christ.

The Most Important Commandment

Sermonette by Clyde Finklea

Jesus' answer to the scribe in Mark 12:28-30 reveals that the greatest commandment is rooted not only in what God requires, but in who God is.

Then Comes the End

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

Christ's return marks the beginning of the end of mankind's problems. However, His return will not be the final end, which comes when God is all in all.

The Perfect Husband

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Husbands need to imitate God's behavior as reflected through the life of Jesus Christ. Isaiah 54 reveals Yahweh (who became Jesus Christ) as the Husband of Israel.

Does Doctrine Really Matter? (Part Eleven)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The material presents Jesus Christ as Yahweh by identifying Him directly as the God of the Old Testament whose law, purpose, and authority the Gnostics rejected. Their lawless teaching and conduct amounted to a rejection of Jesus Christ because He is Yahweh, the One who gave the law through Moses and spoke through the prophets. When they rejected Yahweh and His law they rejected Jesus Christ's law, even while claiming Him as Savior. This denial extended to His angels, the Hebrew nation, the Sabbath, and the creation account, all of which the Gnostics associated with Yahweh and therefore despised. The material connects this error to the broader message that Christianity centers on God's grace in revealing Himself, redeeming through Christ's blood, and providing His law as guidance. Because Jesus Christ is Yahweh, the same eternal principles of righteousness apply across all ages, and true faith produces obedience to His commandments rather than turning grace into license. The apostles warned that those who separate themselves from this truth lack the Spirit and face judgment for their hard speeches against Him.
