Discord From Self-Determination
Sermonette by Martin G. CollinsDiscord, as highlighted in Proverbs 6:16-19, is among the seven things the LORD hates, described as an abomination to Him. It is defined as an intrinsic disagreement that produces quarreling, dissension, and antagonism, synonymous with strife, conflict, contention, and variance. There is nothing beneficial in sowing discord; it only destroys. Drawing from historical parallels, discord was sown by Hitler in Czechoslovakia in 1938 through a propaganda campaign targeting the Sudeten Germans. By promoting self-determination, he convinced them they deserved a separate destiny, despite their prosperity and rights within a democratic state. This led to violent uprisings and ultimately the annexation of the Sudetenland, weakening Czechoslovakia's defenses and facilitating further Nazi aggression. A similar pattern of discord through self-determination is observed in modern Israel, where Arab regimes push for the separation of Judea and Samaria, mirroring the tactics used in Czechoslovakia. This strategy aims to undermine Israel's defensive terrain, exploiting the appeal of self-determination to create division and tension. In the church, discord manifests under the guise of self-determination, where individuals or groups, feeling unfairly treated, sow strife and division. Proverbs 26:20-21 illustrates that strife ceases without a talebearer, likening a contentious person to fuel for fire. II Peter 2:18-19 warns of those promising liberty while enslaving others to corruption, a tactic used by satan to disrupt unity among God's people. Scriptural accounts, such as Miriam and Aaron's rebellion against Moses in Numbers 12, reveal God's severe displeasure with discord and dissension, resulting in punishment like Miriam's leprosy. The LORD's anger underscores His hatred for such division. Further, I Corinthians 10:10 cautions that murmuring and complaining can lead to destruction by the destroyer, while Jude 16 describes grumblers and complainers as seeking personal advantage, further disunifying God's people. Lamentations 3:37-39 challenges the justification for complaints, asserting that woes and well-being come from the Most High, and complaining reflects a lack of acceptance of deserved consequences. Philippians 2:12-15 urges believers to work out their salvation without complaining or disputing, shining as blameless lights in a perverse generation, emphasizing individual responsibility to avoid discord for the sake of unity and God's good pleasure.
