The Beast From the Earth and 666
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughIn Revelation 13:11-18, the second beast, known as the Beast from the Earth or the False Prophet, emerges as a significant figure in the end-time context. This beast rises out of the earth, symbolizing stability and endurance, in contrast to the first beast which rises from the sea, representing volatility and political turmoil. The earth suggests a worldly, human origin, tied to fundamental human needs for consistency, often fulfilled by religion, which remains relatively unchanged through generations compared to shifting governments. This second beast is described as having two horns like a lamb, indicating a deceptive appearance of innocence or even a counterfeit resemblance to Christ, yet it speaks like a dragon, revealing a Satanic nature at its core. Its characteristics mirror those of the first beast, both being linked to the dragon who grants them power and authority. The beast from the earth exercises all the authority of the first beast as its representative, directing worship toward the first beast and the dragon, clearly marking it as a religious entity with both ecclesiastical and temporal power. The False Prophet performs great signs, including making fire come down from heaven, a deceptive miracle intended to convince people to worship the wrong god. These signs are not mere tricks but actual wonders, granted by Satan, designed to lead people into idolatry and error. Additionally, this beast causes an image of the first beast to be created, animating it to speak and to exert authority, possibly teaching false doctrine and having power over life and death for those who resist. The False Prophet is also responsible for the mark of the beast, commanding all—rich and poor, great and small, free and slave—to give themselves this mark on their right hand or forehead. This mark is not a physical brand or tattoo but likely a spiritual or attitudinal sign of loyalty and identity with the beast, evident in one's actions and thoughts. Those who take it voluntarily align themselves with the beast, and without it, they cannot buy or sell, facing social and economic marginalization. The mark, name, and number of the beast are equivalent, all signifying worship of the beast, whether for political, religious, or economic reasons. Finally, the number 666, associated with this beast, is presented as a symbol of ultimate human imperfection apart from God, representing a system and ruler embodying humanism and opposition to Him. It is not a literal number to be calculated for an individual but a marker of attitudes, goals, and teachings that elevate humanity while denigrating God. Thus, the Beast from the Earth plays a central role in deceiving the world, enforcing worship of the first beast, and marking those who follow with a sign of ultimate rebellion against Him.
