The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Two Demon-Possessed Men Healed (Part Three)

Bible Study by Martin G. Collins

In the miracle recorded in Matthew 8:28-34, Mark 5:1-20, and Luke 8:26-39, Jesus Christ commands unclean spirits to come out of two men. Demons must obey Jesus, though they object and are unwilling to abandon their victims. Christ could have compelled them to leave immediately, but He exercises caution, as the men might not have survived the exorcism on their own strength. In another incident in Mark 9:26-27, a single demon, upon leaving a man, causes great convulsions, leaving him as if dead until Jesus takes his hand and lifts him up, restoring him. In the case of the two men, Jesus addresses them as if possessed by a single spirit, but the demon reveals his name as Legion, indicating he leads a company of demons. Mark notes that the swine, into which the demons enter after the exorcism, number about two thousand, suggesting the horrific plight of the men if each demon had its own personality yet operated under one unified will. Christ does not send the demons into the swine but merely out of the men, allowing the demons to enter the swine by divine consent, after which the swine are driven into the sea. Significant changes occur in the men after the exorcism. First, they adopt a new posture of sitting and resting, contrasting their previous constant roaming among tombs and wilderness. Second, their attitude transforms; initially wanting nothing to do with Christ, they afterward desire to follow Him out of reverence, though Jesus directs them to witness to others instead. Third, whereas they wore no clothes before, they are clothed afterward, reflecting improved modesty and cleanliness. Fourth, they regain their sanity, their minds cleared of chaos and made orderly. Fifth, they exhibit self-control, as indicated by being in their right mind, a stark contrast to the uncontrollable nature of the demons within them before Christ's intervention. Jesus instructs the healed man to share his deliverance with those closest to him, to serve as an example of God's grace among family and friends.

The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Exorcism in the Synagogue

Bible Study by Martin G. Collins

Four of Christ's thirty-three miracles involve the casting out of demons. Satan always tries to counter God's work, leading to a marked rise in demonic activity during the years surrounding Jesus' ministry. Scripture reveals that exposing and casting out satan and his demons is the responsibility of Christ. Some demons crave embodiment, resulting in demon possession where one or more demons inhabit a human or even animals. Mental and physical diseases often accompany demon-possession, as demons perversely desire to destroy the bodies they inhabit. During a busy day, Jesus teaches in the synagogue and casts out a demon there. Later, the whole city gathers at Peter's door, bringing to Him all who were sick and demon-possessed, demonstrating His power over demons and great compassion for the people. Demons are called unclean spirits due to their moral impurity and contrary attitude, violently recoiling when faced with the authority of the spiritually clean Christ, crying out in fear before His holiness. Demons invade people by overriding their conscious personality, allowing the unclean spirit to speak through them. Resentfully lusting for victory over humanity, demons often heavily influence people, contributing to the unclean spiritual condition of society. The demon in the synagogue recognizes Jesus as the Holy One of God, but He prohibits its testimony, refusing to receive witness from such a lying, diabolical source. There can be no association between Christ and satan, and Jesus does not converse with demons but commands them by the power and authority of His heavenly Father. Jesus expels the unclean spirit with a short, direct order backed by God's authority, telling the demon to hold its peace, meaning to be gagged or muzzled. The unclean spirit obeys in rage and anguish. No man can cast out demons by his own power; even the archangel Michael called on God's authority to rebuke satan. Similarly, Paul commands a spirit of divination to come out in the name of Jesus Christ. The people in the synagogue are amazed and fearful of God's power through Jesus, astonished by how He exorcises demons simply by His command, showcasing the power of God's Word. Unlike contemporary methods that sometimes used prayers or chants, Christ authoritatively commands demons to leave, demonstrating His power over evil.

The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Exorcising a Young Boy (Part One)

Bible Study by Martin G. Collins

Descending from the mountain after His transfiguration, Jesus Christ encountered a scene of chaos where His nine disciples had failed to cast out a demon from a young boy. This failure provided the critical scribes with an opportunity to dispute and attempt to disprove the authority of both the disciples and Christ. Upon His arrival, Jesus countered this failure with success, healing the boy and silencing the scribes. The disciples, surprised by their inability to cast out the demon, asked Jesus why they had failed. He replied emphatically that it was due to their unbelief, stressing that this kind of demon does not go out except by prayer and fasting. Jesus emphasized the necessity of faith, intercession, and self-denial, pointing out that their lack was not in intellectual acceptance but in living faith in His divine omnipotence. The boy suffered horribly from severe convulsions, foaming at the mouth, grinding of teeth, and rigidity, often falling into fire and water due to sudden attacks. He was also deaf and mute, able only to utter inarticulate sounds, his condition leaving him emaciated. Jesus rebuked the demon, and it departed from the boy, who was freed from that moment. Taking the boy's hand, Jesus delivered him to his father, replacing disruption with calmness, peace, and order through His spiritual power. This miracle teaches that the power of faith is essential to overcome the enemy. The disciples' failure stemmed from carelessness in their spiritual walks, neglecting prayer and fasting. The authority Jesus granted them was effective only when exercised by faith, which must be cultivated through spiritual discipline and devotion. Jesus affirmed that all things are possible to those who believe, highlighting that even the smallest faith, like a mustard seed, directed to God, can yield spectacular results.
