The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Healing a Stooped Woman (Part One)
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsLuke records a poignant miracle of Jesus Christ performed in a synagogue, the healing of a stooped woman. This Sabbath-day miracle illustrates the profound purposes of God's plan, emphasizing the sanctity of the seventh day as a time for holy convocation and vital worship of the one true God. While His adversaries watched closely, hoping to trap Him in a breach of Sabbath law, Jesus demonstrated His authority and compassion. The woman's condition was severe and pitiful, enduring for eighteen long years. She was bent completely forward, utterly unable to straighten herself or look upward, her posture a result of a harmful curvature of the spinal vertebrae. Her stooped state, caused by a spirit of infirmity, stemmed from a derangement of the nervous system with roots in both physical and psychological instability. Satan had a hand in her disability, oppressing her mind and body, though not through demon-possession but through a burdensome influence that worsened her hunched condition. Despite her physical disability and the humiliation it brought, the woman did not let her infirmity prevent her from attending Sabbath services. Her dedication to worship, even amidst great difficulty, showed her faithfulness and appreciation for spiritual opportunities. She persisted in seeking God, undeterred by obstacles or the lack of immediate divine intervention. Her presence in the synagogue, driven by a concern for her spiritual health, positioned her to receive the healing touch of Christ, fulfilling the promise that seeking first the kingdom of God brings added blessings. Jesus, seeing her plight, loosed her from this bondage, affirming that only God can truly set a person free from the oppression of sin and Satan.
