Are the Blood Moons Significant? (Part One)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

The Bible contains several references to cosmic disturbances, including the darkening of the sun and the moon turning to blood, as significant signs before the great and awesome day of the Lord. Joel 2:31 states that the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, heralding this momentous event. However, other scriptures provide further context for these occurrences. In the sixth chapter of Revelation, the Sixth Seal describes not only the moon turning red but also disturbances in the sun, stars, and the sky itself, indicating a far broader scope of upheaval than mere eclipses. These events include stars falling and the sky receding, which are unrelated to predictable lunar events. Additionally, the Sixth Seal signifies a time when the stability of the heavens is disrupted. God declares through Haggai that He will shake the heavens, and Christ, in the Olivet Prophecy, confirms that the powers of the heavens will be shaken, as noted in Matthew 24:29. Isaiah 13:13 further states that the earth will be moved out of its place, rendering calculations for events like eclipses impossible during this period of cosmic chaos. These disturbances are positioned after the Fifth Seal, which involves the martyrdom of those who hold the testimony of God, and follow a time of unprecedented tribulation, as described in the Olivet Prophecy accounts. Thus, the darkening of the sun and related signs are tied to a sequence of events that have not yet fully unfolded.
