Thankful Forever

CGG Weekly by Martin G. Collins

Is it not a shame that a day set apart for thanking the Almighty Creator and Sustainer of the Universe is over-hyped for secular purposes or barely given a cursory glance, if not entirely ignored, in the rush to the next holiday on the calendar? Is it not a disgrace that so many are just plain unthankful, ungrateful, unappreciative? A thankless person shows a core character flaw of self-absorption, an attitude visible in many who perfunctorily observe Thanksgiving.

Ingratitude

Article by Mark Schindler

Ingratitude often blinds us to the blessings we receive, focusing instead on what we lack. We frequently view ourselves as deprived rather than blessed, seeing our glass as half-empty rather than half-full. How many of us sincerely thank God for what we have and for His work in creating us in His image? How often do we gratefully sing His praises and glorify His holy name, whether He answers our prayers or not? Ingratitude can separate us from God and the purpose He has for us. It fosters a false sense of worth, leading us to believe we deserve more, and if unchecked, it becomes a plague of discontent that infects others. Two biblical examples highlight this destructive attitude. Korah, dissatisfied with what he had, stirred up others against Moses due to his ingratitude for what God had already given him, resulting in God destroying those who rose against His chosen leaders. Similarly, satan, not content with his exalted position as a covering cherub at God's throne and lordship over the earth and many angels, desired to compare to the Most High, leading to rebellion and a battle he lost. This ingratitude can ultimately drive a person into total rebellion against God. Ingratitude, whether passive or active, is a tool satan uses to draw us away from God's Family, potentially planting us as tares among the wheat to spread discontent. Conversely, a constant attitude of praiseful thanksgiving, regardless of circumstances, is a gift from God that spreads a healing balm among those we fellowship with and speeds us on the path to His Kingdom.

Benefits of Thanksgiving

CGG Weekly by Gary Montgomery

Ingratitude has become a prevalent attitude, overshadowing the original purpose of giving thanks to the Almighty God for His benevolent care and providence. Many people focus solely on acquiring material goods, neglecting to thank God for His benefits or even for the ability to purchase what they desire. Despite God's kindness to all, as He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust, and is kind to the unthankful and evil, ingratitude persists. Humanity enjoys numerous benefits, prosperity, and resources, yet remains unthankful, often complaining and prioritizing self-interest over gratitude. This thankless heart, seen in historical examples like Israel's complaints after witnessing God's miracles, mirrors the modern mindset of selfishness and pride. Such unthankful character traits are evident in society, and there is a stern warning to turn away from those who exhibit them. In contrast, a thankful attitude, exemplified by David's frequent expressions of gratitude in the Psalms, reflects love and obedience to God. Giving daily thanks to Him for His blessings, including unasked-for benefits and the calling to His truth, is essential, as His mercy endures forever.
