Grace is the unmerited divine assistance given for regeneration and sanctification. God gives it freely because that is His character, and because of what He is working out in His purpose. This assistance is in no way earned, for He is not obligated or duty-bound to give it. All He truly owes is the death earned through sin, yet He gives grace anyway. Grace preceded faith, and without His gift godly faith would never exist. It supplies every need as His spiritual creation moves toward His conclusion, and it is the single most important aspect of spiritual and eternal salvation.

Living By Faith and God's Grace

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

Grace is the unmerited divine assistance given for regeneration or sanctification. This assistance is in no way earned because God is not obligated or duty bound to give it. He gives grace freely because that is His character and because of what He is working out in His purpose. In terms of spiritual well-being this understanding is vital because from beginning to end salvation occurs by means of divine benevolence and gifting by God. All He truly owes is the death earned through sin yet He gives grace anyway. Biblical grace connects to its secular usage but its spiritual application takes on a vastly greater dimension because it is the single most important aspect of spiritual and eternal salvation and because His giving of it is completely and totally unmerited. These facts strengthen humility before Him since He owes nothing regardless of circumstance. Salvation occurs because of what God freely gives yet it can be lost when one refuses the gifts. Grace preceded the having of faith in Him and without His gift of grace godly faith would never exist. Faith is a fruit of the grace God freely gives. Calling and election by God preceded even the slightest fragment of saving knowledge and thus the having of faith. Therefore no grace of God could possibly be earned. Grace and faith are both gifts of God. Grace is the source of power that enables a person to do spiritual things. The apostles used charis to illustrate specific ways and means that God's character is expressed in His plan of salvation. From the fullness of grace many beneficent gifts toward salvation are received including a continuous flow of blessings gifts favor powers forgiveness knowledge understanding wisdom healings and protection through God's loving concern. He supplies every need as His spiritual creation moves toward His conclusion.

Living By Faith and God's Grace (Part Two)

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

Grace is completely and totally unmerited. There are no automatic entitlements. God is not fulfilling every desire but every need as His spiritual creation moves toward His conclusion. Grace is not given because God is obligated, compelled, forced, or duty-bound. It is freely conferred. Scripture contains not one example of it being given as a reward. God gives grace because that is His character. He gives it because He is working out His purpose. All He owes is the death earned through sin. Justification by grace through faith is a necessary part of being created in the image of Jesus Christ. If justification were earned through works, it would open the door for human pride to drive the relationship with God. Justification must be received as a freely given and unearned gift because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Sinners are under the law, which condemns them. Justification cannot be claimed as a right due to law-keeping. The purpose of justification is to be judged righteous before God through faith in what He has promised. Grace is a term that represents the freeness of God's personal, patient, and concerned generosity. His blessings and saving acts continuously flow to assist along the way. God's saving work is a creative labor that forms people into the image of Jesus Christ and requires freely given cooperation. Grace is the single most important aspect of spiritual and eternal salvation.

Living by Faith: God's Grace (Part Two)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Grace is the unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration and sanctification. The key word in that definition is unmerited, meaning that grace, this divine assistance, this giving of power, is in no way earned. God's giving of grace to us is completely and totally unmerited. It cannot be earned. Salvation is benevolence gifting by God from beginning to end. God gives grace freely, not by constraint. He is not compelled or forced. He is not duty-bound to give it. This divine assistance is in no way given because God is obligated. He gives it because of His purpose being worked out, not because He owes it for what might be thought earned. Grace the divine assistance is in no way given because God is obligated. Every step along the way is preceded by God's grace. If He did not gift it, the journey would never be completed. All along the way God is present and doing His part to enable success. God's grace is the single most important aspect of spiritual and eternal salvation. Nobody would be saved but for God's grace. God's grace permeates every aspect of the body of Jesus Christ. It is the power He gives to enable response to His requirements. Receiving God's grace most assuredly is not a one-time thing that justifies before God. It is supporting and fulfilling need all along the way.
