The Spirit World
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughThe spirit world, also referred to as the angelic world, exists as a realm beyond human perception and access. Those called of God may have slightly more connection to it, but it remains largely invisible and inaudible to us. The Bible provides limited information about this world, revealing just enough for our spiritual journey toward the Kingdom of God without burdening us with matters beyond our understanding. This scarcity of detail appears to be by design, as God offers only what is necessary for our walk, ensuring we are not distracted by the incomprehensible. In this spirit world, angels, both good and bad, inhabit a domain separate from ours. They are spirit beings, lesser than God in every way, yet far greater in power and strength than humans. Created individually by God before the earth, they witnessed its formation with joy, singing together at the sight of His remarkable creation. Unlike humans, they lack a reproductive capacity, suggesting a fixed population, numbering in the millions as indicated by vast counts in Scripture. Angels hold various roles and ranks within the spirit world, described as sons of God, holy ones, watchers, cherubim, seraphim, and heavenly hosts, among other terms. These designations hint at their functions as messengers, guardians, warriors, and servants of God. Some, like Michael, identified as an archangel, and Gabriel, hold specific prominence, while others remain unnamed or mysterious in their duties. The spirit world also includes fallen angels, or demons, led by the adversary, once known as Hillel, who rebelled against God's order. The righteous angels of the spirit world exhibit humility and submission, accepting their created purpose as ministering spirits. They serve God and assist His elect, acting as protectors and helpers in His plan for salvation. They consider themselves fellow servants alongside humans, sharing a common Master and mission. Despite their superior power and knowledge, they remain limited, not omniscient, and even express curiosity about the deeper aspects of God's redemptive plan, which unfolds as a revelation to them as well. Scenes of the spirit world, particularly around God's throne, reveal a realm of constant praise and complex beings, yet much remains beyond human comprehension. God has chosen to withhold extensive details about this world, hiding many specifics just as He concealed parts of His plan from the angels themselves. As such, we must be content with the knowledge provided, recognizing angels as intelligent, powerful, yet humble entities who serve both God and us in our path to salvation.
