Love
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsLove, in its true form, is the cornerstone of godly character and the channel through which all other fruits of the Spirit are borne. However, there exists a wrong type of love that is forbidden by God. Love of the world, often mistaken for true love, is equated with lust, which is self-centered and destructive. Conforming to the world's version of love demonstrates a hatred toward God, as it opposes His divine nature. True love, imparted by the Holy Spirit, stands in stark contrast to this false concept, as it is rooted in obedience to God's law and expressed through outgoing concern for others. Those who have God's love perfected in them cannot fear, for they are free from the dread of punishment and the torment of sin, unlike the empty and harmful nature of worldly love.
The Nature of God— What's Love Got To Do With It?
'Ready Answer' by Joseph B. BaityBy expanding, adulterating, and reshaping the meaning of love, satan has promoted and encouraged its overuse, and, at the same time, diluted its meaning. There is scarcely a more abused, overused, or bastardized word in the English language than love, applied to everything from clothing and entertainment to family and intimate acts, even designating zero points in tennis. This overuse spans countless expressions in popular culture, with billions of internet hits for love-related content, millions of songs, poems, movies, and quotes portraying love as temporary madness, a battlefield, or something to be feared and avoided. Such portrayals suggest love justifies wrongdoing or weakens resolve, distorting its true essence. Many faith-based charities perform commendable works in the name of love, aiding the needy through soup kitchens and shelters. Yet, often, the motivation behind these efforts hinges on an emotional reward, reducing love to a mere feeling heightened by doing good. Similarly, the self-help movement promotes self-love as a prerequisite to loving others, encouraging inward focus and self-indulgence. This dangerous conclusion, fostered by satan, transforms love into a selfish, destructive force that prioritizes self over others and over God, preventing a true understanding of His nature. Instead of being a selfless, outgoing, and unifying attribute reflecting God's essence, this distorted love hinders spiritual growth and the journey toward sanctification. As cunning as satan is, we must counter his efforts by striving to comprehend the Word of God, resisting his attempts to redefine the nature of our loving Creator, who reveals through His actions and commandments what love truly means.
Love God, Love Neighbor
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughMany popular songs from the twentieth century, such as "Love is Here to Stay," "Love is a Many Splendored Thing," "Love Makes the World Go Round," "All You Need is Love," "Love is All Around," "Love is in the Air," and "Love is the Answer," glorify love to an extreme, often focusing on romantic notions. These songs suggest that love is the ultimate solution to all of humanity's problems, portraying it as a cure-all and universal antidote that can empty jails, clean streets, fill bellies, pull down barriers, cure ailments, bridge chasms, line pockets, purify the environment, and lead to a golden age. However, these artists and songwriters often lack a true understanding of what real love is. Their definitions, such as John Lennon's idea of love as appreciation for others and allowing them to be, are vague and lack clear parameters. This fuzzy thinking promotes a concept of love that simply allows others to exist as they are without deeper engagement, fostering ideas of mere coexistence and multiculturalism where differences are accepted without question or absolute standards. Such notions trivialize love into a simplistic, liberal ideal of just getting along, envisioning a world where enmities and prejudices magically disappear through passive acceptance. This shallow conception of love fails because it disconnects love for others from a higher source or purpose. It focuses solely on human interaction without recognizing a deeper foundation, rendering it ineffective in addressing the true needs of humanity. As a result, these false concepts of love cannot achieve the harmony and transformation they promise, revealing a profound misunderstanding of love's origin and operation.

No Real Love Without God
Sermon by John O. ReidMany songs have been written about love, yet the world's concept of love often misses the mark. The idea that love makes the world go around is a pleasant notion, but in reality, the world is driven by satan's ways of greed, hatred, lust, and self-seeking—the way of get, the way of self. The love celebrated in songs and by society is frequently tied to the fleeting excitement of romantic entanglement, rather than the true, outgoing concern for others that reflects God's nature. Man's idea of love is far simpler and more self-centered than God's; it is often reduced to deep devotion, affection, or strong sexual passion toward another, or even mere enjoyment of activities like skiing or riding a motorcycle. Such definitions fall short of the benevolent, selfless love that God embodies and calls us to exhibit—a love that seeks the best for others, not merely what they desire. The world, lacking a true understanding of God, rarely grasps the depth of this love, focusing instead on personal satisfaction rather than the outgoing goodwill and kindness that mirror God's character.
