A Royal Priesthood

Sermonette by Austin Del Castillo

We have a much bigger reason for developing godly character than merely make it into the Kingdom. We are rehearsing our roles as a royal priesthood.

The Priesthood of God (Part One)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

In the unfolding purpose of God, as revealed through Scripture, there is a profound calling for His people to become a kingdom of priests. As stated in Exodus 19:5-6, if the children of Israel obey His voice and keep His covenant, they shall be a special treasure to Him above all people, and they shall be to Him a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. This promise establishes a divine identity and responsibility for His chosen ones. This concept is echoed in the New Testament in I Peter 2:9, where believers are described as a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and His own special people, called to proclaim the praises of Him who brought them out of darkness into His marvelous light. Here, the calling extends beyond physical descent to a spiritual unity among all who are in Christ, reflecting a shared purpose and character. Further, Revelation 5:9-10 envisions a future fulfillment where the redeemed from every tribe, tongue, people, and nation are made kings and priests to our God, destined to reign on the earth. This prophetic scene underscores that God's goal is not only to create sons in the image of Jesus Christ but to prepare them specifically as priests under His leadership. As part of this divine plan, Jesus Christ is the High Priest, and those who are in Him are already part of His priesthood. Being in Christ means His work becomes their work, following Him wherever He goes, both now and into eternity, as highlighted in Revelation 14:1-5. This priesthood is not merely a future role but a present responsibility, requiring preparation to carry out the duties Christ will assign in the Millennium and beyond. Thus, the calling to be a kingdom of priests is a central theme in God's purpose, uniting believers as spiritual Jews, part of the temple of the living God, and equipping them to serve under Christ in bringing salvation to all nations.

The Promise and the Kingdom

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)

Looking backward to Abraham, we uncover the profound spiritual significance of God's promises, which point to the gospel of His salvation through faith. Among these promises is the vision of a Kingdom of Priests, intricately woven into the fabric of God's covenant with Abraham and his descendants. In I Peter 2:9, God's children are described as a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, highlighting their unique role in His divine plan. This spiritual nation, as foretold in Daniel 2:44, is an eternal kingdom established by the God of heaven, one that shall never be destroyed and will stand forever, extending beyond the Millennium and history itself. Furthermore, God's promise in Genesis 17:6 that kings shall come from Abraham carries a deeper spiritual fulfillment. While historically fulfilled in physical dynasties, the ultimate realization is seen in Revelation 5:10, where future kings and priests are promised to reign on the earth. These are the faithful in Christ, Abraham's true seed as described in Galatians 3:29, who will rule with God, embodying the spiritual essence of this promise. Thus, the concept of a Kingdom of Priests emerges as a cornerstone of God's eternal plan, reflecting a nation of spiritual rulers destined to inherit and govern in His everlasting Kingdom.
