The Old Covenant, as a formal and legally binding agreement between God and Israel, mirrors the structure of human contracts with defined terms, responsibilities, and consequences. It was established with the house of Jacob, the children of Israel, as the second party, with God Himself as the primary party. Israel's obligation was straightforward yet challenging: to obey Him and keep His covenant. In return, God promised to regard them as His special treasure above all other peoples, to make them a kingdom of priests, and to form them into a holy nation as a model for others to emulate. This covenant, however, was flawed from the outset due to the people of Israel, not God. His promises are inviolate, and He always fulfills what He declares. The fault lay with Israel, who lacked the capacity to uphold their part of the agreement. Their hearts were not set aright, and their spirits were not faithful to God. They quickly forgot His miraculous works and rebelled, showing a stubborn and unfaithful nature that undermined the covenant's purpose. The prelude to the Old Covenant set out these basic terms, but the people, recently freed from slavery, likely focused on the promise of prestige over all other peoples, agreeing without fully grasping the depth of their commitment. Their immediate agreement masked an inner reluctance, and they failed to invest in the covenant, abrogating it almost as soon as it was sealed. Despite God's display of awesome power to instill fear and encourage obedience, they reduced Him to their level, disregarding the difference between His holiness and their own nature. The specific terms of the Old Covenant included the Ten Commandments as the preamble, embodying eternal principles of God's law that predate the covenant and remain inviolate. Further ordinances and judgments detailed proper interactions within the community, covering aspects like slavery, violence, property, and worship practices such as Sabbath and feast observances. God's promises within the covenant reiterated protection, abundance, healing, fertility, long life, and territorial expansion, alongside commands to remove foreign gods and avoid alliances with the inhabitants of the land. Ultimately, the Israelites' failure was not due to an impossibility in keeping the covenant but a refusal to do so. Their minds were set against it, influenced by human nature's hostility to God's law. The covenant was formally ratified and sealed with blood from offerings, binding God and Israel to form a holy kingdom of priests. Yet, within less than forty days, their disobedience was evident as they turned to idolatry, marking the beginning of a cycle of failure.
