Benefits of Thanksgiving

CGG Weekly by Gary Montgomery

Thanksgiving was originally established to give thanks to the Almighty God for His benevolent care and providence to men, but it has become commercialized, overshadowing the essence of gratitude. In the rush of modern life and moral decline, the giving of thanks has become a rare thing. Many fail to thank God for His benefits throughout the year, not even for the ability to acquire material goods, focusing instead on personal gain. God gives benefits to all humanity, as Jesus states that He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust, showing kindness even to the unthankful and evil. We are called to thank Him daily for all His blessings, not just the pleasant things, but for His benefits, mercy, and graciousness. The Psalmist urges men to give thanks to the LORD for His goodness and wonderful works, for He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry with goodness. Each of us, in training for a position in the Kingdom of God, should be extremely thankful to Him for His benefits, testing, and training, responding in humbleness of mind and thankfulness of heart. Despite enjoying immense benefits and prosperity, many remain complainers, unthankful for what God has bestowed so freely, allowing selfishness and pride to reign. We must not fall into this end-time mindset of ingratitude but instead be humble, respect God, and thank Him for His daily providence. Gratitude, as exemplified by David in the Psalms, should be a recurring theme in our lives, showing love for Him through daily thanks. We must never slack off in giving Him thanks, especially as the world spirals down morally and ethically, for God has given us amazing benefits, including our calling to His truth and the opportunity to become His children. As the Psalmist declares, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, and His mercy endures forever.

The Spirit of Gratitude

Sermon by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)

Pride, the kind demonstrated by Nebuchadnezzar when he boasted about what he had accomplished, militates against any feelings of gratitude.

New Covenant Priesthood (Part Four)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Sacrifices of thanksgiving, praise, and gratitude are required of God's called out priests. By meditating on the right things, we prepare ourselves for prayer.

Be Thankful!

Sermon by John O. Reid

The danger of abundant blessings is that we tend to forget the source of the blessings and cease being thankful. When we forget to be thankful, we forget God.

The Importance of Appreciation

CGG Weekly by John Reiss

In addition to thanking God for all He does, it is a godly principle to take time to consider the kind acts of others and let them know we appreciate them.

Thankfulness (1986)

Sermon/Bible Study by John W. Ritenbaugh

We need to give thanks for everything, blessings and trials. Christianity ought to be an exhilarating experience, but it depends on our outlook on life.

You Have Not So Learned Christ

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

While the truth of Christ has the power to elevate, our worldly orientation blinds us, dulls our minds, and pulls us downward to abject slavery to sin.

New Covenant Priesthood (Part Six)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

We must have both perseverance and humility in prayer to keep our vision sharp and clear. Without humility, the doorway to acceptance by God is closed.

Living by Faith: God's Grace (Part Four)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Because we are all sinners, we have earned only death; justification is not earned, but must come through faith and believing God as did our father Abraham.
