Creator, Sustainer, Head (Part One)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

In the book of Hebrews, the author emphasizes Jesus Christ's supremacy over the ritualistic aspects of the Old Covenant, which were soon to vanish. Christ is presented as the author and finisher of faith, guiding believers through current circumstances and preparing them for turmoil ahead. The author begins with extraordinary statements, declaring that through the Son, the Father created the ages, encompassing divisions of time, history, and culture that sum up to eternity. This includes not only the physical world but also the pre-Flood age, the present age, and the ages to come, all created by the One who became Jesus. Furthermore, Christ is described as upholding, maintaining, guiding, sustaining, and propelling all things by the word of His power. This ongoing operation includes managing the entropy of the physical creation, ensuring that the progression from order to disorder aligns with His will, from the orbits of planets to the life and death of each sparrow. All things are in His power to perpetuate or eliminate, as He created them, maintains them, and is heir to them.
