Faith and the Christian Fight (Part Nine)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Faith in Jesus Christ is faith in a precious Person, not merely in a body of doctrine. Peter repeatedly calls precious what is in reality Christ Himself, and in II Peter 1:1 the preposition "in" (rather than "through") shifts the focus of faith from a thing to a Being. Faith as trust is only as strong as faith in the One who speaks, so God's promises become precious because of who gave them. Moses esteemed "the reproach of Christ" greater than the treasures of Egypt, though Christ had not yet appeared, and the patriarchs likewise knew their Creator, listened when He spoke, were persuaded of His promises, and embraced them as a personal possession. That relationship carried them through a hundred years or more of conversion without receiving the promises, and it led them to live as strangers and pilgrims. Jesus' words in John 17:3 show that eternal life means knowing the Father and Christ, a relationship with a living Person who must be known better and better. A promise from someone known only casually cannot sustain a person for long. Those who seek Him, pray without ceasing, study His word and works, meditate on Him, and submit to what they learn will persevere because they know Him. Like the father in Mark 9:24, who cried "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief," believers take their imperfect faith to the One who gives it and ask for more. The Samaritans in John 4 illustrate the point: they believed because they heard Christ Himself, not merely the woman's report.

Futility, Sovereignty, and Faith

CGG Weekly

In the face of life's pervasive futility, where creation itself is subjected to decay and frustration by God's will, we find ourselves powerless to overcome spiritual challenges through our own strength. Jesus Christ declared that without Him, we can do nothing, emphasizing our dependence on Him for any true progress. Just as we cannot change the color of our hair by sheer will, we cannot declare ourselves sinless or earn anything from God through our own efforts. Yet, there is a way revealed to us: faith in Jesus Christ, the Savior, who alone can supply what we lack spiritually. As Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness, so too must we place absolute faith in Christ to accomplish His will for us. This trust in Him provides the strength to face any obstacle and conform to His will. Scripture repeatedly demonstrates His unmatched power and capability, affirming that He is God, and we should seek aid from no other. From the smallest temptations to the greatest trials, we can trust Christ to work all things for good, even if the outcome is not visible until the resurrection. Freedom is not free; our God gave His life so that we and creation might be set free. We are commanded to choose wisely, to choose life through faith in Him, as creation eagerly awaits the glorious freedom of God's faithful children.

Our Faith Is the Victory

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

We overcome the world through our faith in Jesus Christ, a conviction that He is the Son of God. This faith transforms us, enabling us to resist the influences of a hostile world and to conquer its powers. As believers begotten of God, we possess a new disposition and outlook, viewing the world from God's perspective rather than a merely human one. Our relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ, our Advocate and Mediator, empowers us to defeat the evil influences surrounding us. Faith in Jesus Christ is both a gift from God and a dynamic force that must be lived out actively. It is not something we can generate on our own; it comes through applying God's way of life as described in His Word. This faith enables us to trust in God's promises, even when we cannot fully understand His methods or reasons. It is the evidence of things not seen, a spiritual assurance that transcends physical sensation or human reasoning. Our faith in Jesus Christ allows us to draw strength and power directly from Him, relying on His ability to deliver and protect us. This passive reliance is complemented by an active working out of faith, where we meditate on God's knowledge and act righteously according to His will. Through faith, we see the true nature of the world, recognizing that no human solution can address its fundamental problems, and we detach ourselves from its deceptions. Christ's indwelling Spirit makes overcoming the world not only possible but assured, as we belong to Him like branches to a vine. Even in moments of failure, when we feel overwhelmed by sin or despair, our faith in Jesus Christ reminds us that He is faithful to forgive and cleanse us if we confess and repent. This faith sustains us through trials, keeping our focus on the ultimate glory awaiting us, and empowers us to produce righteous fruit with the strength of His Spirit. Our faith in Him is the victory that overcomes the world.

Faith Overcomes the World

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

Faith in Jesus Christ, defined by John as the conviction that He is the Son of God, is the victory that overcomes the world (I John 5:4-5). Being born of God gives a new outlook and the capacity to exercise faith, which cannot be worked up by human effort but is God's gift, coming through hearing His Word (Romans 10:17) and growing over time through Bible study, prayer, and obedience. Faith overcomes in two ways. Passively, it means running to Christ as a strong tower and relying wholly on Him: "I can do all things through Christ," and apart from Him we can do nothing. Actively, it means works, since faith without works is dead, as shown by Abraham. Faith also lets the Christian see the world's true nature, remain detached from politics and worldly optimism, and look ahead to future glorification. Faith is endangered by demanding to know why God permits trials or how He accomplishes miracles. John the Baptist had to trust without understanding, and Peter's faith failed on the water when he lost sight of Christ and relied on physical sensation. When the Christian fails, Christ remains Advocate and propitiation, and His faithful mind dwelling in the believer through the Spirit enables obedience. Faith is thus the gift that covers past sin, the key to obedience, and the way to victory.
