The Promise and the Kingdom

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)

God's promises to Abraham proclaim the gospel of His salvation through faith, highlighting the spiritual significance of a chosen generation. As Peter states in I Peter 2:9, God's children form a nation, a spiritual entity distinct from physical or national identities. This nation, described in Daniel 2:44 as a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, endures beyond historical timelines and earthly kingdoms, embodying the eternal Kingdom of God. The promise of numerous descendants, as seen in Genesis, points to a vast spiritual family, with Isaiah 9:7 declaring that the increase of His government and peace will have no end, forever growing. Furthermore, God's promise in Genesis 17:6 that kings shall come from Abraham finds its ultimate fulfillment in the spiritual realm, with future kings and priests reigning as described in Revelation 5:10. Finally, the promise in Genesis 22:18, that through Abraham's seed all nations shall be blessed, is clarified in Galatians 3:16 as a spiritual blessing through Christ, uniting all who share Abraham's faith in the family of God. These promises collectively underscore the eternal, spiritual inheritance awaiting the chosen generation who walk in faith as Abraham did.

Wilderness Wandering (Part Three)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

The community described in Scripture is portrayed as a chosen generation, a priesthood, a holy nation, and a special people, uniquely belonging to God. This chosen generation signifies a body of people with a common spiritual descent, handpicked by God through His sovereign initiative. This selection reflects a deep, personal love from Him, setting this group apart as forerunners in His purpose to create a new race of beings. As a royal priesthood, this community is elevated to the highest status, directly under the King of kings, indicating a group of highly-placed beings working for and with God on behalf of others. Their holiness emerges through God's creative effort and their cooperation, transforming them from the inside out despite their human weaknesses. As a special people, they stand out due to characteristics exclusively their own, becoming like God in love and unity, which starkly contrasts with the disunity and competitiveness of the world. This unique ownership by God, who bought and paid for their redemption, marks them as distinct, bearing His name symbolically on their foreheads, reflecting their alignment with His thoughts and purposes.

Examine and Come Out

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

We are not merely tourists meandering through life; we are very special people, chosen of God. We have a special responsibility and a unique goal. We are a chosen generation, a designation that aligns with the context of Isaiah 43, where God speaks of forming a new thing, and we are His witnesses, His chosen. This term can also be translated as a chosen race, indicating that we share a common ancestor in God Himself, having been specifically selected by Him. This choice was not a result of accidental circumstances but a deliberate act, akin to adoptive parents choosing a child, making us full-fledged sons through adoption by God. Out of all the people on the earth, God selected us, impregnating us with His mind, a decision made entirely within His sovereign will. This selection transforms us into unique individuals, bearing the proud and glorious name of sons of God. We carry this identity with a sense of honor, reflecting the awesome privilege of being chosen by Him to share in His glory.
