Did the Thief on the Cross Go to Heaven with Jesus Christ (Luke 23:43)?

Bible Questions & Answers

Jesus Christ, after His crucifixion, was buried in a new sepulchre in a garden near the place of His crucifixion, as described in John 19:41-42. It was He, entirely, who was laid in the tomb, not merely His body, affirming that He was dead for three days. According to I Corinthians 15:3-4, Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. Further, Acts 2:31 clarifies that His soul was not left in the grave, translated from the Greek word "hades," meaning the grave, and His flesh did not see corruption. This indicates that during those three days, Jesus was in the grave, not in Paradise.

Proofs of Christ's Resurrection

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Sanhedrin and a prominent figure in Jerusalem, played a crucial role in the burial of Jesus Christ. After His death, Joseph obtained the body, embalmed it, and wrapped it, ensuring over a period of hours that there was no life remaining. Alongside Nicodemus, he placed Jesus in his own tomb, a fact witnessed by Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, who observed the process and knew precisely which tomb it was. Pilate, the Roman governor, granted permission to the Jews to set a guard on the tomb and seal the stone until the third day had passed, preventing any access. This seal, likely made of wet clay over ropes across the tomb's entrance, would show any tampering, and guards were stationed to ensure no one could approach. The short time between the burial and the setting of the guard, combined with the disciples' fear and hiding, further confirms that no interference occurred. These measures, witnessed by multiple individuals including Joseph, Pilate, the centurion, and the women, establish beyond doubt that Jesus was dead and securely entombed.
