Stalked by Satan
'Ready Answer' by Mike FordBe sober, be vigilant; for your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Like a lion, he operates under the cover of darkness, using deception as his camouflage, remaining invisible to his prey. His senses are sharp, allowing him to see us when we are unaware of his presence, patiently stalking with predatory skill. As lions hunt within a territory alongside a pride, he and his demons target the weak, the ailing, and those who stray from the herd. When he strikes, he inflicts great pain, not killing immediately but pinning down and wounding his victims first. Yet, even in his grasp, we can call out for help, for the LORD is near to all who call upon Him, hearing their cry and saving them. Picture him as a lion, silently and invisibly stalking, always seeking to isolate and ambush you from the shadows. Stay alert to avoid being caught in his deadly trap.
Satan (Part 4)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughSatan manipulates human reasoning primarily through disinformation and the subtle shaping of attitudes so that thoughts turn toward self-satisfaction at the expense of obedience to God or service to others. This aim constitutes the essence of sin because it elevates self above God and neighbor even though self-interest is not inherently wrong. The process occurs largely through indirect influence because the air is charged with his spirit and human nature is already tuned to that wavelength from birth. Yielding therefore feels natural, yet it produces the predictable fruit of confusion, division, and warfare in individuals, institutions, and entire cultures. Satan first fell prey to this pattern when vanity over his beauty, intelligence, and abilities led him to believe the lie that he was being denied his rightful position. That lie burned within him until he told himself another lie about the solution, then enlisted other angels by persuading them that they too were mistreated and should overthrow God. The same sequence repeats whenever he moves people to feel they are not receiving what they deserve. He exploits well-meaning friends, false prophets, and even personal trials to foster resentment and the conviction that God is withholding good things. Once the feeling of mistreatment takes hold, he encourages self-justifying actions that appear reasonable yet violate love and submission. In this way he turns government regulations, employment pressures, marital tensions, and church relationships into occasions for rebellion rather than patient endurance after the pattern of Christ. The resulting self-centeredness produces attacks on others through gossip, accusations, and withdrawal, thereby generating the confusion and division that mark his presence. Even after long restraint he remains effective at deception because he appeals to the desire for immediate satisfaction without cost. The only defense lies in sanctifying God's word in the heart so that His thoughts displace the disinformation and the believer chooses self-denial over self-indulgence.
Satan (Part 2)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughSatan employs a range of mental devices, wiles, contrivances, techniques, stratagems, plans, procedures, plottings, and schemes to invade the human mind, imagination, and reasoning. These intrusions take the form of arguments, opinions, convictions, and feelings that exalt themselves against the knowledge of the person of God, His goodness, and the rightness of His promises and way of life. The purpose is to alter behavior, destroy relationship with God and the church, and deflect attention from eternal spiritual priorities toward material or vain concerns that appear important while making truly significant matters seem unnecessary. Satan achieves this through subtlety, creating illusions and distractions that turn good qualities into tools of destruction, such as converting godly sorrow into excessive self-pity that produces bitterness or righteous indignation into unforgiving self-righteousness. He disseminates disinformation through false prophets and ministers who speak lies plausible enough to seem true, often under the guise of inspiration that must be tested against already revealed truth. These agents appear as wolves in sheep's clothing, teaching a broad, easy path rather than the narrow, difficult way that leads to life, and their influence can produce national consequences such as drought and invasion when accepted without examination. The pattern appears consistently from the Garden of Eden onward. There Satan cast doubt on God's credibility with a subtle question, minimized the stated penalty, and offered the reward of becoming like God, thereby reorienting focus from obedience to self and fostering competition against the Creator. The same incremental process operates today as desire fuels imagination that gradually makes sin attractive, leading step by step from minor compromises to enslavement. This modus operandi connects directly to the larger warfare in which believers are engaged: because the earth is their inheritance yet remains occupied by disqualified spiritual powers, Satan seeks to prevent them from overcoming as Jesus overcame. Awareness of his characteristic methods enables early detection, rendering much of his cleverness ineffective and supporting the responsibility to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
