God's Will in the End Time

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the end times, the contention between God and humanity will reach a violent and destructive climax. God's patience will end, and the crisis at the close of the age will commence. The nations will be driven to march their armies against Jerusalem, gathering in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, renamed the Valley of Decision, where God will judge them severely for their treatment of Israel and their insolence toward Him. This judgment will result in unprecedented pain and destruction, with the Beast and the False Prophet being cast into the Lake of Fire. Following this destruction, God will initiate a period of restoration. He will bring about a Second Exodus, returning the surviving remnant of Israel to the Promised Land, where they will be converted and restored. God's plan includes provoking Israel to jealousy by calling the Gentiles to salvation, ultimately leading to the salvation of all Israel. His ultimate goal is to convert the whole world during the Millennium, though many will rebel when Satan is released at the end of this period. After the Millennium, the Great White Throne Judgment will occur, lasting about 100 years. During this time, everyone who has ever died will be resurrected and given an opportunity for salvation and eternal life. This resurrection is not just to physical life but includes the chance for conversion and eternal life. God's overarching will for the end time is for all humanity to come to repentance, accept the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and live forever with Him in joy and godliness. He desires a kingdom filled with His children, sharing everything He has with those who are converted and have eternal life, asking only that they humble themselves and conform their wills and ways to His.

Deceptions of the End Time

'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the context of the end times, Jesus warned His disciples about the rise of deception as a significant sign of His coming and the end of the age. He cautioned them to be vigilant, stating that many false prophets would emerge and deceive many, particularly through religious falsehoods preached in His name. This pervasive deceit extends beyond Christianity to other religions, where falsehoods and misrepresentations of truth are common, leading billions astray from the true path. Jesus emphasized the importance of not being deceived by these false teachings and urged a steadfast adherence to the truth. The end times are marked by an overwhelming increase in deception across all facets of society, not just in religious contexts. The coming of the lawless one, a future event, will be accompanied by false signs and wonders orchestrated by Satan, designed to appear as if they are from God. This figure will employ all forms of unrighteous deception, seeming righteous to the unsuspecting, yet discernible to those who hold fast to the truth. Satan will intensify efforts to deceive as many as possible, especially targeting the called sons of God, with the lawless one gaining worship from all whose names are not written in the Book of Life. Resisting such deception requires a firm conviction in the truth first revealed to the apostles, serving as the surest protection against the pervasive lies of the end times already unfolding.

The End Is Not Yet

'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The increasing frequency and cost of natural disasters in recent times have led many to speculate about the end of the world. For true Christians who anticipate the return of Jesus Christ, this heightened media coverage of disasters can create false hope, suggesting that the end is imminent with every catastrophe. However, the return of Christ should not be gauged by worldly reports or media hype, but by the sure word of prophecy found in Scripture. Disasters serve as precursor judgments, warnings to nations of their sins and their drifting from God, urging repentance and a restored relationship with Him. The ultimate judgment, known as the Day of the Lord, will be a time of darkness and divine wrath, far surpassing any disaster witnessed thus far. Jesus Himself provides clear guidance about His return, cautioning against deception by false christs and false prophets who will perform great signs and wonders to mislead even the elect. His second coming will not be secretive or hidden; it will be a worldwide, unmistakable event, like a massive flash of lightning and thunder across the sky, occurring during a time of war. This return will mark a period of wrath and power as He comes as the great Judge to slay His enemies and establish His Kingdom. The Day of the Lord will be a time of immense destruction and loss, described as a great and dreadful day, not something to be eagerly desired. As the days grow darker, true Christians must heed these warnings, repent of their sins, and draw closer to God in preparation for His glorious appearing.

The Olivet Prophecy Paradox

Sermon by David C. Grabbe

Some have been perplexed about the apparent paradox within Christ's Olivet Prophecy which, on one hand, describes the end time in human history—so severe that without the intervention of Almighty God, no flesh would survive. But, on the other hand, Christ compares those same days to the ordinary routines of Noah's and Lot's times, namely eating, drinking, marrying, buying, and selling, that is, life carrying on as if nothing were amiss. The paradox can be neutralized by realizing that Christ does not emphasize the prosperity but the suddenness of the destruction, striking when people least expect it. The paradox is also resolved when we realize the incredible ability of people to adapt to suffering such as the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII when people maintained a sense of "normal life" amid horrific conditions, some heroically, while others betrayed their fellow victims through compromise. Humans have an incredible resilience seeming "normal" even though tribulation. The true danger is not the result of human weapons or disasters, but Almighty God's "days of vengeance" on both Israel and the gentile nations for rebellion and oppression. In this context, unless God shortens those days, all flesh would perish. Adaptability can numb us to sin. Just as elites of the Warsaw Ghetto danced among the corpses, God's people tragically can adapt to lawlessness as their love turns ice cold. God's people must resist adapting to sin and spiritual complacency but stay ready for Christ's unexpected return.
