Demonic principalities are powerful evil entities under Satan's authority, described as rulers, powers, and authorities of darkness, influencing nations and world events as permitted by God to fulfill prophecy. These spiritual forces, numbering possibly millions, control regions, shape cultural values, and manipulate human thoughts through media and elites, driving wars, suffering, and misery. They broadcast destructive attitudes like envy and greed into human minds. As seen in Ephesians 6:12, our struggle is against these spiritual forces in heavenly realms. Though formidable, Jesus Christ holds total authority over them, demonstrated in His miracles and victory at the crucifixion, ensuring ultimate triumph as Satan and his demons will be imprisoned for 1,000 years.

Sermonette by Clyde Finklea

Our calling resembles walking headlong into dangerous, deadly storm currents. Satan and his demons are fighting against God and those who belong to Him.

The Great Conspiracy

'Prophecy Watch' by Earl L. Henn

The Bible reveals that powerful forces, known as demonic principalities, exist as the real rulers of this world, used by God to fulfill prophecy. These evil entities, under the authority of Satan, are described as principalities, powers, and rulers of the darkness of this age, forming a vast army of spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places. Their numbers may be in the millions, and they exert influence over the nations and rulers of the earth. God permits these demonic forces to shape world events, as seen in instances where evil spirits influence decisions and outcomes to align with His purposes. In end-time prophecies, Satan and his demons are shown to wield great power, granting authority to a future world-ruling empire and its leader, enforcing control over all aspects of life, including commerce, and compelling idolatry under threat of death. These invisible beings broadcast attitudes and thoughts into human minds, driving actions that result in wars, suffering, and atrocities throughout history. Their influence continues as long as they hold sway over this world, perpetuating misery through envy, jealousy, lust, and greed.

The Conquering Offensive!

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

For nearly six thousand years, Satan has invisibly swayed the nations, guiding human governments, influencing civilizations, possessing powerful leaders, and inspiring world wars. His impact has caused immense misery, hate, suffering, and violent deaths, plaguing mankind since the disobedience of Adam and Eve. As our accuser and adversary, he remains a major hindrance to those seeking God and unity with Him. The Day of Atonement symbolizes the removal of Satan and his demons from influencing mankind, marking their imprisonment in a place of restraint for a thousand years. In the spiritual warfare we face, our struggle extends beyond the human level to an invisible battle against Satan and his forces. These demonic principalities are described as rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world, and spiritual forces of evil in heavenly realms. As rulers, they exert control over specific regions, their influence varying in strength across different areas of the world. As authorities, they manipulate the values of our culture, promoting a self-centered philosophy, pleasure for its own sake, and materialism, all under Satan's control for his destructive ends. As powers, they dominate through control over thoughts and actions, often through secular influences that shape contemporary moral philosophy. These spiritual forces are wicked and destructive, standing in opposition to the holy power of God. Our battle against these principalities requires us to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, equipping ourselves with the full armor of God to stand against the schemes of the devil. We must fight with vigor against these powerful and cunning foes, recognizing that our strength comes from Christ. Though we are unequal to the battle in our own power, imbued with His strength, we can engage in this relentless, life-long struggle against evil. Jesus Christ has demonstrated His mastery over these principalities, casting out demons with authority and defeating Satan in direct confrontation during His temptations. Even at His crucifixion, when the powers of evil seemed triumphant, He vanquished them, triumphing over them in victory. As we prepare for Christ's return, we must train to fight spiritually alongside Him, using spiritual tools against both physical and spiritual enemies, including these demonic forces. The antichrist world system will be crushed by Christ's spiritual power and might, as He and His saints combat both human and demonic adversaries. Despite the terrible power of Satan and his forces, we are encouraged to stand firm, knowing that victory is assured through God's provisions and the power of Christ, enabling us to triumph and bring honor to His name.

Against All Odds

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

We are a tiny force standing against countless wicked spirits arrayed against us, much like a small band facing a vast army. Whether we fight against satan, ourselves, or this corrupt society, victory is possible if we stand firm, fight with all our strength, and refuse to betray our cause. Our spiritual enemies, including satan, the world, and our own human nature, are powerful and subtle, ready to exploit any lapse in our attention or commitment. They constantly test our defenses, attacking and assaulting at every opportunity. If we are not focused, if we do not remain vigilant on all sides, our position will surely be overrun. As soldiers of Jesus Christ, we must withstand these relentless attacks, holding our ground at all costs, for satan, like a persistent enemy, will renew the assault without fail. We must always be ready, knowing that the next attack could come at any moment, potentially stronger than the last.

Don't Let Your House Stand Empty

Sermon by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)

Demonic infestations represent a profound and dangerous threat, often involving multiple entities that can infiltrate and influence a person's mind and life. In Mark 5, an individual is described as being under the control of numerous demons, so many that he was nicknamed Legion, a term suggesting a vast number akin to a Roman military division of about 6,000 soldiers. This illustrates the severity and scale of such spiritual infestations. In Luke 11, Christ teaches about the nature of demonic influence using the imagery of a strong man guarding an estate of valuable assets, such as talents, abilities, good attitudes, and trusted relationships. If a stronger force overcomes this guard, it can plunder these assets, not destroying them but exploiting them for evil purposes. Demons subtly corrupt a person's mind over time, using their abilities and relationships for ill, turning even a well-regarded individual into a tool for misapplying truth and causing harm. Christ's analogy in Luke 11 also warns that anyone can be vulnerable to demonic infestation. If Christ is not the guard within one's mind, a demon can take control, misusing even sacred truths for diabolical ends. This is evident when individuals misapply God's Word to justify wrong actions, revealing the influence of demons who have stolen and abused the sword of truth. Further in Luke 11, Christ emphasizes the universal threat of demonic infestation, stating that one is either with Him or scattered, highlighting that this danger applies to all. Demons surround us like air, viewing humans as interlopers on a planet they consider theirs, ready to attack any unguarded mind. Christ also warns of the risk of re-infestation in Luke 11, noting that when a demon is cast out, it may return with others if the house— the mind—remains empty. Without Christ as the security guard, a person's condition can become worse than before, as demons actively seek minds to inhabit, working insidiously like unseen termites or beetles, eventually revealing their ruinous impact through the works of the flesh. In II Peter 2, the damaging work of demons among mankind is further described, echoing Christ's warning that a person's last condition can be worse than the first when overtaken by such infestations. The insidious nature of these spiritual invaders calls for constant vigilance and reliance on Christ to guard against their subtle and destructive influence.

Confronting the Field of Battle

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

For nearly 6,000 years, satan has invisibly swayed nations, guided human governments, influenced civilizations, possessed powerful leaders, and inspired world wars, causing hate, misery, and violent death. As our accuser, adversary, and attacker, he remains a major hindrance to our seeking God and our devotion to the Almighty Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Our struggle, as described in Ephesians 6:12, is not merely against flesh and blood, but against rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. These demonic principalities exert control over regions, with satan's influence being stronger in some areas than others. Rulers govern specific territories, operating regionally as finite creatures of great power, unable to be everywhere at once like God. Authorities shape the values of culture, manipulating societal norms such as self-centeredness, pleasure-seeking, and materialism for satan's base ends. Powers control what people think and do, influencing through secular media and hidden elites, standing behind powerful figures. These spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms are wicked and destructive, requiring spiritual power to combat them. Jesus Christ, however, has total control over these principalities and powers, demonstrated in His ability to command and exorcise demons with authority, as seen in His miracles. During His temptation, He directly faced satan and defeated him with the words of Scripture, repelling him effortlessly. At the crucifixion and resurrection, Christ vanquished satan and his forces, turning apparent weakness into victory over all powers set against us. Though we face a terrible enemy in satan and his demons, we are to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, relying on His strength to fight this spiritual battle. Armed with God's provision, we can stand against satan's schemes, knowing that ultimately, satan and his demons will be removed for 1,000 years, imprisoned to no longer deceive mankind, ensuring victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Enduring as a Good Soldier

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

We are engaged in a spiritual war against demonic principalities, enemies far greater in number, intelligence, subtlety, cunning, and power than any physical foe. These invisible forces have been entrenched in this world for countless millennia, believing it to be their domain, their first estate. They are determined to defend it with all their might, for God initially gave it to them, and now He intends to reclaim it for His Son and us as our inheritance. Our struggle is not merely against human adversaries but a battle to the death against these supernatural powers that aspire to wield control and maintain their hold over what they possess. The commanding general of these forces arrayed against us is satan, the pagan god leading this opposition. We must stand our ground, holding our position as a military strategy, resisting with determination, and never underestimating the strength of this enemy. Our warfare carries the trappings of literal conflict, yet often we remain unaware of its reality, leaving us unprepared to wage it successfully. God is pointing out that we are indeed soldiers in this active war, facing privation, hardship, pain, sorrow, fear, and insecurity, with times of victory, defeat, obedience, discipline, courage, sacrifice, and even death. The battle lines are forming, becoming more visible each day, as we see our liberties eroding, and the enemy is on the move. Christ has already broken through satan's lines, and we must follow His lead, pressing forward in this spiritual conflict to overcome these demonic forces and secure our inheritance.

Is the United States a Christian Nation? (Part Five)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

We are engaged in a very real spiritual war against invisible foes that inhabit and dominate the world, as described in the Bible. These spiritual enemies are demon spirits who use the people of the world to accomplish their aim of destroying God's purpose. Though we cannot see, hear, smell, or taste these enemies, we must acknowledge their presence because God's word affirms it. The world serves as the home-base for these unseen demon spirits, influencing people who lack an intimate relationship with God to act against His will. Every confrontation with these unseen spirits begins as an intellectual battle, often challenging our knowledge of God's word. Whether it is satan himself or lesser demons, we are intellectually outmatched, as they may know God's word better in a factual sense, though they lack true understanding or appreciation of it. The battle is over truth, aiming to weaken us into confusion and sin by questioning what God has said. Despite our weaknesses, we have overcome these enemies if we remain steadfast, as evidenced by our continued presence in the fight. Jesus Christ, the heavy artillery, steps in to protect us, ensuring that the tests from these demons are tempered to our capacity. His angels fight on our behalf against satan's angels, safeguarding us as we grow. With a maintained relationship with Him, He blocks these foes from overcoming us, always providing a way of escape, as He is faithful and determined to see us into the Kingdom of God. The battle remains over truth, and our primary weapon is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. We are called to stand firm, not to be knocked off our feet or to lay down, but to defend ourselves with truth against the attacks inspired by these demon spirits. Though the war is spiritual, and we do not make war against people, the demons influence the world to attack us, aiming to break our will and trust in God's word. With Jesus Christ at our side, and by holding fast to truth, we are encouraged to endure, knowing we are already overcoming these unseen enemies.

Satan (Part 1)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Satan, as the leader of a vast army of demons, exerts a profound unseen influence over humanity's troubles, not by forcing actions but by exploiting ignorance and carelessness. This influence intensifies for those who have received God's Holy Spirit through baptism, as satan then focuses greater attention on them. The Scriptures reveal that satan and his angels were cast down to earth after losing a major battle in heaven, making earth a place of restraint, a prison for these fallen beings. They are held in chains of darkness, symbolizing their confinement and impending judgment, yet they share this space with humanity, viewing us as intruders in their domain. These demonic principalities, under satan's command, once held positions of authority but rebelled, led by helel, a being of immense beauty, wisdom, and power, created by God as the pinnacle of His fiat creation. Iniquity corrupted helel, turning him into satan, who sought to be like the Most High, inciting a war against God with a portion of the angels. Defeated, they were cast down, losing much of their former liberty, now restrained on earth as their first domain became a silo of confinement. The number of demons following satan is significant, potentially one-third of the angelic host, ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions, based on symbolic figures surrounding God's throne. These invisible beings, with greater knowledge of God's laws and longer existence on earth, are formidable adversaries not to be disregarded. Their power is evident in struggles such as the one in Daniel, where a mighty angelic being was delayed by a powerful demonic force, possibly satan himself, until aided by another archangel, Michael. Satan's kingdom of demons is divided against itself, marked by internal competition and disorganization, unable to fully unite due to their rebellious nature. This division is an advantage for humanity, as their inability to coalesce limits their effectiveness. Despite their numbers and strategies, they tremble before God's ultimate power, restrained by His authority. Good angels, outnumbering demons at least two to one, serve as ministering spirits to the heirs of salvation, protecting and intervening on behalf of God's people, often without human awareness. Satan and his principalities use every means to thwart God's plan, targeting the heirs of salvation who are destined to replace them in rulership over the earth. They employ cunning, deceit, and stratagems, projecting cynicism and doubt, as seen in satan's interaction with God over Job, assuming selfish motives in obedience. Yet, God sets limits on their actions, allowing tests within the measure of faith and love, ensuring that victory is assured through Jesus Christ, who has already defeated satan. Humanity must stand firm, clothed in the whole armor of God, to resist these supernatural enemies and hold position against their deceitful persuasions.
