Revelation 10 and the Church's History

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The seventh seal in the book of Revelation marks a significant moment of transition and progression in the sequence of events. As described in Revelation 8:1-2, when He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about the space of half an hour. Following this profound silence, seven angels standing before God were given seven trumpets, initiating the sequence of trumpet plagues. These plagues unfold progressively, indicating the passage of time between each occurrence, reinforcing the chronological movement within the narrative of Revelation. The opening of the seventh seal, distinct from the preceding seals, sets the stage for intensified events leading towards the culmination of God's plan. Unlike the rapid succession of the seven bowls of wrath in chapter 16, the trumpet plagues associated with the seventh seal occur sequentially over a span of time, highlighting the deliberate pacing of divine judgments. This seal's opening is a pivotal point, transitioning from the earlier seals' revelations to the catastrophic trumpet plagues that further unfold the apocalyptic vision.

The Seventh Trumpet

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The seventh trumpet constitutes the seventh seal of Revelation. When this seal opens, the seven trumpets sound successively, and the seventh trumpet encompasses the seven bowls of God's wrath, the seven last plagues. Its sounding is not a brief fanfare but extends over days or longer while these plagues unfold, culminating in Christ's return as King to execute judgment, gather the elect, reward the saints, and establish God's everlasting kingdom. The proclamation in heaven declares that the kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of the Lord and of His Christ, prompting the twenty-four elders to worship in humility and gratitude. It announces the nations' anger met by divine wrath, the time for judging the dead or nations, the rewarding of prophets, saints, and those who fear God's name both small and great, and the destruction of those who destroy or corrupt the earth. This trumpet fulfills Old Testament themes of the Day of the Lord, where the shofar signals alarm for war, the gathering of God's people, the threshing of enemies, and triumphant shouts of victory, echoed in the New Testament accounts of heavenly signs, the descent of the Lord with the trumpet of God, the resurrection of the dead in Christ, and the change of the living at the last trumpet. The opening of the heavenly temple revealing the ark of the covenant signals either expanded access to God for the repentant or the onset of judgment through accompanying lightnings, thunders, earthquake, and hail. For the faithful this event bridges the prior holy days focused on individual redemption and the future feasts encompassing all humanity, serving as the keystone that consummates God's plan by transferring sovereignty from Satan to Christ and initiating the millennium.
