What Is the Prophesied 'Pure Language'? (Part Two)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

Language, when pure, mirrors a culture transformed by a profound shift from the sinfulness of human society to one that embraces God and His way of life. A pure language, as mentioned in Zephaniah 3:9, signifies a heart aligned with divine truth, beyond mere absence of obscenity or deceit. Isaiah's experience exemplifies this, as he, overwhelmed by the majesty of the Lord, recognized his own impurity, lamenting his unclean lips amidst a people similarly defiled. His purification by a seraphim's touch with a live coal symbolized the cleansing of his heart, reflected outwardly through his speech, transforming his words into a true expression of spiritual reality. This purification by fire parallels the broader theme of destruction and renewal in Zephaniah, where a pure language follows devastation, enabling a renewed call to God. Similarly, at Pentecost, the apostles, marked by tongues of fire, were purified to witness for Jesus Christ, demonstrating that God's transformative power transcends any specific human language. God expresses His will across various tongues, showing no preference for one over another, as all human languages, developed by imperfect beings, fall short of divine purity. True connection with Him relies not on specific pronunciations or sacred names, but on the alignment of the heart with His transcendent character and nature.

What Is the Prophesied 'Pure Language'? (Part One)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

In Zephaniah 3:9, the Lord declares that He will turn to the peoples a pure language, enabling them all to call on His name and serve Him with one accord. This prophecy, which began to be fulfilled in the first century, speaks of a coming change in speech rather than a restoration of something previously possessed. The Hebrew word for language, often translated as lip or edge, signifies a termination point, extending to words and speech, and ultimately reflecting the heart's condition. In Hebrew thought, the lips are the termination of the heart, the true engine of speech, as the heart determines what is spoken, whether acceptable or perverse. Thus, a pure language indicates a transformed heart and culture, one that includes God and mirrors a renewed reality. As culture shifts, language evolves, reflecting either degradation or improvement, but with a pure language, the dominant culture will undergo a profound renovation, aligning with divine principles.

A Pure Language

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

We don't need to be experts in Hebrew or use Hebrew names to call on the name of the Lord, nor is Hebrew sacred. Pure language comes from an undefiled heart.

What Is the Prophesied 'Pure Language'? (Part Three)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

Beginning with the Feast of Pentecost in AD 31, God opened salvation to those of any human language He chose to call. The miracle of languages seen in the apostles demonstrates that God can overcome any language barrier to enable His chosen people to call on His name in any language of men, as long as there is a new heart and a new spirit. What His people need are spiritual lips, speaking from a new heart, not carnal lips speaking a specific tongue. With repentance, baptism, and the receipt of the Holy Spirit, a cleansing takes place, and a new heart is given, teaching the lips to speak in a way that reflects a new spiritual reality. The speech of one who is being converted becomes pure, not merely by avoiding foul language, but by speaking truth. A Christian's speech increases in purity as it reflects more of the culture of the Kingdom of God and less of the culture of carnal mankind that is passing away. Pure lips, and thus a pure heart, are required to truly honor and beseech God, for only when the heart is cleansed can it recognize and speak His truth. A cleansed heart, turned toward God, changes a person's whole life, and what comes out of his mouth will show that, regardless of his native tongue. The Day is approaching when cleansed and humbled peoples will speak a pure language, indicating they have different hearts. Spiritual Israel has already undergone a cleansing and received access to a pure heart, yet there remains much work to purify our hearts so our King will accept our way of life when He returns.
