Faith and the Christian Fight (Part Nine)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The essence of faith in Jesus Christ, as highlighted in the lives of the heroes of faith, underscores a profound trust in a personal and precious Being. Their faith was not merely in a set of doctrines but in the One who spoke the promises, making those promises as valuable as the Speaker Himself. They knew who they were dealing with—their Creator—and they believed Him, were persuaded by Him, and embraced both Him and His words. This deep, personal relationship enabled them to persevere through long periods of trial and stress, surviving over a hundred years of conversion by relying on the preciousness of Jesus Christ and His assurances. Moses esteemed the reproach of Christ more precious than the riches of Egypt, understanding who He was dealing with, even centuries before Christ's literal appearance. Similarly, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Samuel, David, Ezra, and Nehemiah treasured Him, listening intently when He spoke, and valuing His words as much as they valued Him. This faith in Jesus Christ became their staff and stay, allowing them to overcome the busyness and stress of their times. The relationship with Jesus Christ is vital, as it transforms a mere body of beliefs into a living connection with a Person. Hearing a promise from someone known only casually may initially motivate, but it cannot sustain without a growing relationship with the Promise-Giver. Those who diligently seek Him, pray without ceasing, study His word to know Him better, meditate on the importance of this relationship, and submit to what they learn—these are the ones who will persevere. Their knowledge of Him becomes ever more precise, magnifying Him to greater intensity in their lives.

Futility, Sovereignty, and Faith

CGG Weekly

In the face of life's pervasive futility, where creation itself is subjected to decay and frustration by God's will, we find ourselves powerless to overcome spiritual challenges through our own strength. Jesus Christ declared that without Him, we can do nothing, emphasizing our dependence on Him for any true progress. Just as we cannot change the color of our hair by sheer will, we cannot declare ourselves sinless or earn anything from God through our own efforts. Yet, there is a way revealed to us: faith in Jesus Christ, the Savior, who alone can supply what we lack spiritually. As Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness, so too must we place absolute faith in Christ to accomplish His will for us. This trust in Him provides the strength to face any obstacle and conform to His will. Scripture repeatedly demonstrates His unmatched power and capability, affirming that He is God, and we should seek aid from no other. From the smallest temptations to the greatest trials, we can trust Christ to work all things for good, even if the outcome is not visible until the resurrection. Freedom is not free; our God gave His life so that we and creation might be set free. We are commanded to choose wisely, to choose life through faith in Him, as creation eagerly awaits the glorious freedom of God's faithful children.

Our Faith Is the Victory

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

We overcome the world through our faith in Jesus Christ, a conviction that He is the Son of God. This faith transforms us, enabling us to resist the influences of a hostile world and to conquer its powers. As believers begotten of God, we possess a new disposition and outlook, viewing the world from God's perspective rather than a merely human one. Our relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ, our Advocate and Mediator, empowers us to defeat the evil influences surrounding us. Faith in Jesus Christ is both a gift from God and a dynamic force that must be lived out actively. It is not something we can generate on our own; it comes through applying God's way of life as described in His Word. This faith enables us to trust in God's promises, even when we cannot fully understand His methods or reasons. It is the evidence of things not seen, a spiritual assurance that transcends physical sensation or human reasoning. Our faith in Jesus Christ allows us to draw strength and power directly from Him, relying on His ability to deliver and protect us. This passive reliance is complemented by an active working out of faith, where we meditate on God's knowledge and act righteously according to His will. Through faith, we see the true nature of the world, recognizing that no human solution can address its fundamental problems, and we detach ourselves from its deceptions. Christ's indwelling Spirit makes overcoming the world not only possible but assured, as we belong to Him like branches to a vine. Even in moments of failure, when we feel overwhelmed by sin or despair, our faith in Jesus Christ reminds us that He is faithful to forgive and cleanse us if we confess and repent. This faith sustains us through trials, keeping our focus on the ultimate glory awaiting us, and empowers us to produce righteous fruit with the strength of His Spirit. Our faith in Him is the victory that overcomes the world.
