The Seventh Trumpet
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughThe seventh trumpet, the last trumpet of Revelation 11:15-19, announces Christ's return and the establishment of God's Kingdom, and it is the fulfillment of what the Day of Trumpets memorializes. Throughout the prophets (Joel, Zephaniah, Zechariah, Psalm 47) and the New Testament (Matthew 24, 1 Corinthians 15, 1 Thessalonians 4), the trumpet is tied to the Day of the Lord as a call to war and judgment, a gathering of the elect, and a shout of victory. The seventh trumpet is the third woe and comprises the seven last plagues. Revelation 10:7 speaks of "the days" of its sounding, so it is no brief fanfare but an extended period, with Christ most likely arriving at its end. Like the plagues of Egypt, the plagues bring repeated blasphemy rather than repentance. The heavenly proclamation that the kingdom (singular) of this world has become Christ's uses the prophetic past tense, since God speaks of certain future events as already done. The twenty-four elders fall on their faces, modeling the right submission, and thank God that He has taken power. Their words divide into punishment, as the angry nations, echoing Psalm 2, face God's wrath, and reward for the prophets, saints, and those who fear His name. The judgment on the nations is punishment for sins, not a final cutting off for most. Daniel 7 parallels this scene of destroying the beast and giving the kingdom to the saints. The ark seen in the opened temple may signal access to God, judgment, or both. For the faithful, the last trumpet ultimately means joy, as Revelation 19 shows.
The Rapture and Trumpets
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughThe seventh trumpet, as part of the seven trumpets which are judgments against rebellious humanity during the Day of the Lord, holds a unique significance. These trumpets, detailed in Revelation 8:1 through chapter 9, verse 29, represent the outworking of the seventh seal, marking the Day of the Lord. The seventh and last trumpet judgment is executed personally by the Judge Himself with His coming. His arrival and the destruction He brings serve as a culmination of God's wrath on sinful, unrepentant humanity, putting down all rule against Him. This trumpet blast announces both the triumphant return of Jesus Christ to establish His Kingdom and the resurrection of the elect, the firstfruits, aligning with the great announcement of His appearing in power and glory.
Trumpets and Hope
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughThe seventh trumpet, as revealed through John in Revelation 11, marks a pivotal moment. It is the last trumpet to sound among others in the prophetic sequence, announcing the inauguration and commencement of Christ's eternal reign on earth. He will never be usurped from His throne. This trumpet blast signifies not only His return as King but also as Judge, bringing rewards for His prophets and saints who fear His name, both small and great, while punishing those who destroy the earth, those who do not fear His name, and those who remain in sin and unrepentant. The sound of this trumpet heralds the establishment of His unending dominion over all nations.
