Unity and Division: The Blessing and the Curse (Part One)
'Ready Answer' by Charles WhitakerDivision, as a contrast to the unity Christ died to establish, is sown by the adversary as part of a divide and conquer strategy. Factions within the church reveal the presence of human nature at work among God's people. Schisms result from carnality thriving in the congregation, emerging where individuals are not fully committed to living God's way of life and fail to acknowledge Him as Sovereign Ruler. A lack of unity in a congregation reflects a proportional lack of repentance among its members. Quarreling manifests as unity-dissolving friction or competition. Divisions and sectarian thinking are listed among the works of the flesh, and false teachers contribute to such divisive consequences. Unity and division stand as irreconcilable opposites, with division connoting randomness, chaos, disorder, and confusion. While division is often linked to human carnality, there exists a form of division inspired and executed by God, proceeding from His judgment.
Unity and Division (Part One)
CGG Weekly by David C. GrabbeGod, in His sovereignty, is not only a God of peace but also a God of division when necessary. Though He ultimately desires harmony for all mankind and unity among His children, His own words reveal that division serves His purpose. Jesus Christ Himself declared that He did not come to bring peace on earth but a sword, emphasizing division over peace in certain contexts. Even the family, a fundamental institution endorsed by God, is not exempt from separation when true worship demands it. God permits division in marriage for the sake of godly peace, as the fruit of righteousness is sown in an environment of peace. In His divine plan, God separates the sheep from the goats and the wheat from the tares, demonstrating that while He desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, He will achieve this in His own time and way. Though unity within the God Family is His ultimate goal, He employs division in the process, even permanently separating those who do not fit within His Family. Division among men stems from carnality, just as sin causes separation from God. Even among those called by God, divisions persist to a lesser degree until the resurrection. However, God can use this human tendency to serve His purpose. Scripture acknowledges that factions must exist within the church, for without such divisions, it would indicate that those being transformed into God's image remain in agreement with those under the influence of the adversary, hindering spiritual growth. Those causing division often serve their own interests and perspectives, and Scripture advises avoiding or rejecting such divisive individuals after admonition, recognizing their warped and self-condemned state. Division, as a function of carnality, will persist while humanity remains mortal. The Father and the Son work to bring us to a place of perfect unity and peace, yet until that time, division and separation will be experienced, sometimes due to misalignment with God and sometimes as a necessary response to the division caused by others. When God causes division, He does so for the sake of salvation. He separated Israel from Egypt to save them physically and has divided His church to combat complacency among those called. He requires distinguishing between the holy and the profane, for in rightly dividing good from evil, His image is taken on. Though peace and unity are godly attributes, God does not hesitate to use division to achieve true peace and unity in His Kingdom.
Division, Satan, Humility
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughWe live in a horribly divided world, where disagreement permeates every aspect of life, from news reports to radio talk shows, revealing countless conflicting opinions on political, monetary, and religious matters. Such division ensures that agreement and unity remain elusive. The works of the flesh, such as adultery, murder, hostility, hatred, jealousy, wrath, selfish ambition, dissensions, heresies, and envy, are rooted in disagreement and prevent unity, reflecting a nature contrary to God's. In the scriptures, particularly in Genesis, we see a record of humanity at variance with God, resulting in separation. Adam and Eve's transgression led to their separation from God and the source of life, the Tree of Life, while Cain's actions resulted in a curse and banishment to a land of wandering. As mankind continued apart from God, violence filled the earth due to disagreement, further dividing them from life itself and from each other. Nimrod stood against God, fostering division, and at the Tower of Babel, God segregated humanity by confusing their communication, scattering them and separating them from the holy line and God's Word. In the New Testament, James reveals a demonic influence behind division, as satan stirs people against one another and against God through the flesh, leading to inevitable separation. Mankind's attempts to unify the nations under an anti-God system, as seen in Genesis 11, are doomed to fail, producing division, destruction, and death. Hosea laments the lack of truth, mercy, and knowledge of God in the land, resulting in confusion mistaken for understanding, which fosters sectarianism—another form of division. Romans confirms this persistent lack of true knowledge among God's people, showing how spiritual deception and a misleading spiritual diet contribute to separation from God. Revelation identifies satan as the deceiver of the whole world, creating a vast gulf between mankind and God, described as impassable in Luke 16. This separation, rooted in sin and pride, cannot be bridged by human effort alone. Even sincere zeal, as seen in Paul before his conversion, can lead to division and persecution when not aligned with true knowledge. Ultimately, division stems from humanity's refusal to submit humbly to God, choosing instead to set personal standards influenced by satanic deception, perpetuating separation from Him.
