Did Angels Marry Human Women?

'Ready Answer' by Staff

Some maintain that Genesis 6 asserts that angels married women before the Flood and engendered a race of giants. This idea seems far-fetched, yet it demands examination. Verse 2 states that the sons of God took wives for themselves of all whom they chose, but these sons of God were not angels. Angels do not marry, as Jesus clearly teaches that in the resurrection, humans neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. Angels, being spirit beings, cannot cohabit or reproduce with women, who are human beings, as different kinds do not breed. God establishes a strict law that each kind must reproduce only after its own kind, a principle supported by the context of Genesis 6:3, where God speaks of fleshly mankind, not angels. Although the children of these unions were mighty, they were still human. Genesis 6:4 notes that there were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and bore children to them, indicating that giants and mighty men existed both before and after these marriages, not solely as a result of them. Giants have existed throughout recorded history, before and after the Flood, showing that such extraordinary size and strength are not limited to the offspring of these specific unions.

Conspiracy Theory (Part Nineteen)

Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

The term *nphiyl* (H5303), often rendered as nephilim, appears in Genesis 6:4, where they are depicted as leaders who rebelled violently against God and His way of life. They existed both before and after the Flood, with their prominence most notable before it, and are also mentioned in Numbers 13:33. Biblically, the nephilim before and after the Flood shared only their large stature, with no genetic connection, as all post-Flood humanity descends from Noah and his family, who were not their parents. The term seems to indicate a warrior class of bullies within communities, with some Hebrew dictionaries defining it as such. These nephilim were considered great, not for social benefit or godly character, but for leading people's base desires toward shortsighted, anti-God excitement. They were trendsetters who encouraged human nature to its wickedest degree, pandering to the unconverted and making them feel satisfied by fleeting pleasures. Labeled as sons of God in Genesis 6:4, this does not imply divine origin but rather a connection to leadership roles, as *elohim* in Scripture can refer to mere men, especially magistrates or leaders rendering judgments believed to be God's will. Thus, the nephilim were popular, anti-God leaders among the people, violent and tyrannical in their influence. Their destructive impact on mankind was so significant that God was moved to mention them, though their numbers were likely few. Like historical tyrants, they wielded immense destructive influence over millions, inflicting great damage on entire nations.

Conspiracy Theory (Part Eighteen)

Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

The term *nphiyl* (H5303), often transliterated as 'nephilim,' appears in Genesis 6:4 in connection with the extreme wickedness of that era. This obscure plural noun, left untranslated in English Bibles, literally means a feller, someone who knocks things over, but through time and usage, it is frequently associated with giants. The verse confirms this by describing them as mighty men, personalities who attracted significant attention and large followings. They are also noted to have lived after the Flood, not confined to the pre-Flood period. It is clear that they were completely human beings, not the offspring of demons and human women, as God's word states each kind reproduces only after its kind, making such reproduction impossible. In the context of Genesis 6:4, the nephilim are linked to the term 'sons of God,' which does not refer to the Creator but can indicate human judges or magistrates, humans in positions of authority leading others. These nephilim are depicted as despotic military or governmental figures, greatly feared tyrants dominating as leaders of cities and nations, akin to historical figures like Nimrod. Their giantism is not solely about physical stature but also about being dominant leaders with large followings in various fields, such as economics, politics, or sports, where they consistently overpower others. In a broader sense, the term nephilim is applied to influential teaching personalities who draw significant attention with their anti-God teachings, misleading many. As wickedness reigns supreme in the world, reminiscent of the time before the Flood, the nephilim are seen as having a major role once again in the rise of forces challenging God.
