Discord From Self-Determination
Sermonette by Martin G. CollinsThe concept of sowing discord is highlighted as a grave offense in the eyes of the Lord, as noted in Proverbs 6:16-19, where it is listed among the seven abominations He hates. Discord embodies intrinsic disagreement, leading to quarreling, dissension, and antagonism, with no beneficial purpose, only destruction. Historical parallels illustrate the destructive power of discord. In 1938, Hitler sowed discord among the Sudeten Germans in Czechoslovakia, promoting self-determination to destabilize the region, despite their prosperity and rights under a democratic system. This propaganda led to the annexation of Sudetenland and ultimately the fall of Czechoslovakia. Similarly, in modern times, discord is sown in Israel through claims of self-determination by Arab regimes, aiming to weaken Israel's defensive positions in mountainous terrains like Judea and Samaria, mirroring the tactics used by the Nazis. This principle of discord extends beyond geopolitical contexts into personal and communal spheres. Proverbs 26:20-21 likens a contentious person to charcoal that kindles strife, emphasizing how talebearing and contention fuel conflict. In the church, discord often manifests under the guise of self-determination, where individuals, feeling unfairly treated, sow dissension, pulling others away from unity. Scriptural warnings against such behavior are stern. In Numbers 12, Miriam and Aaron's discord against Moses, driven by pride and dissatisfaction, provoked God's anger, resulting in Miriam's leprosy as punishment. II Peter 2:18-19 describes those who sow discord as promising liberty while being slaves to corruption, ensnaring others into bondage. James and Paul, in their epistles, caution against grumbling and complaining, linking such actions to condemnation and destruction by satan, as seen in I Corinthians 10:10. Jude 16 further condemns grumblers and complainers who seek personal advantage through flattery, contributing to disunity among God's people. Lamentations 3:37-39 challenges the validity of complaints, asserting that woes and well-being come from the Most High, and murmuring reflects a lack of faith in God's fairness. Ultimately, Philippians 2:12-15 calls for personal responsibility to avoid complaining and disputing, urging believers to shine as lights in a perverse generation by working out their salvation with fear and trembling, trusting in God's will and purpose.
