Is the United States a Christian Nation? (Part One)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

God, through Moses in Deuteronomy 32, and the Apostle Paul in Acts 17, expounds His sovereignty over all nations, indicating that He has settled people where He desired and moved entire populations, both Israelitish and non-Israelitish, to various areas of the Earth at different periods of history as He saw fit. This divine orchestration of national boundaries and resettlements challenges the notion that any specific nation, such as America, was uniquely established by God for a particular religious purpose.

National Identity: Man's Invention or God's Creation?

'Prophecy Watch' by Charles Whitaker

In exploring America's national identity, a significant divide exists between nationalism and cosmopolitanism. Cosmopolitans, who view the world as their city, reject the constraints of national boundaries and embrace a global perspective. They shun parochialism, favoring tolerance, diversity, inclusiveness, and universalism. Their anti-nationalism shapes their belief that national sovereignty should not influence policymaking, rendering patriotism outdated. As transnationalists, cosmopolitans cross and mix national identities, embodying cultural syncretism. According to this view, the world should change America, rather than America maintaining distinct national borders or identity.

Is America a Christian Nation? (Part Two)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

God has consistently demonstrated His sovereignty over the boundaries and dwellings of nations, as seen in His purposeful placement of the Israelitish people throughout history. From the time of Abram, whom He moved from Ur to Canaan, God has directed the migrations of His chosen people according to His divine will. Later, He guided Abram's descendants from Canaan to various lands of captivity after the division of Israel into two kingdoms, following defeats by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Romans. These migrations continued northwest into Europe, where the British Isles were designated for the Ephraimites, forming them into a vast empire. In ancient times, as recorded in Deuteronomy 32:7-9 and Joshua 13 and 14, God meticulously oversaw the distribution of the Promised Land to the tribes of Israel through Moses and Joshua, determining specific inheritances by lot. This pattern of divine allocation persisted into more recent history, though on a broader geographical scale. God set aside vast, nearly empty lands in North America for the Israelitish immigrants, planning for the United States to be occupied by these descendants at the time of the end. He positioned the Manassites, Ephraimites, and Benjaminites in specific regions, just as He placed other nations like the Chinese in China and the Japanese in Japan, according to His predetermined purposes. The Apostle Paul, in Acts 17:26, affirms that God has determined the preappointed times and boundaries of all nations' dwellings, ensuring that they might seek Him. This divine orchestration is further supported by Malachi 3:6, which declares God's unchanging nature, reinforcing His consistent faithfulness to His plans. Unlike the Israelites under Joshua, who knew their identity and had a relationship with God, the later immigrants to America from Europe were unaware of their Israelitish heritage or their connection to Him. Nevertheless, God's hand was evident in moving these people to fulfill His purpose, demonstrating that such massive migrations do not occur randomly but are part of His deliberate design.
