Hebrews (Part Four): Who Was Jesus?
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)Jesus Christ stands as a unique and unparalleled figure, great above all others who have ever lived, embodying characteristics of immense love and humility. He possessed the intellectual powers to design and bring into existence the vast creation, populating it with stars, planets, angels, humans, animals, fish, and birds. Despite humanity's unworthiness, He willingly took on the responsibility to pay for our sins through His divine life, ultimately sacrificing Himself in death. He reveals the Father to us, an essential role without which we would not know the Father. He lives in us, works in us, directs us, and teaches us, being all in all to us. As the Word became flesh, He assumed human nature while remaining God, never ceasing to be divine even in the grave and after resurrection. He experienced human dependencies and emotions, yet remained a perfect blend of divine and human, capable of death when He chose to give Himself over to it. As our connection to eternity, He is vital to our spiritual progress. He exemplified a way of life through His interactions, teaching His disciples in real-life situations, and demonstrating the utmost love by sacrificing His life. He continues to guide spiritually from heaven, overseeing the development of His teachings into what we now recognize as essential writings. His role as High Priest is affirmed through His qualifications: He is the only begotten Son, appointed Heir of all things, Creator of all, the brightness of God's glory, the express image of God's person, the upholder of the universe by His power, the purger of our sins, and now re-established at the right hand of God, second only to the Father in rulership, faithfully working to prepare us for His Kingdom.
