Jesus Christ's Ascension

Sermon by David C. Grabbe

Jesus Christ finished the work the Father had given Him to do. After His resurrection Jesus Christ oriented Himself toward His return to the Father. Jesus Christ appeared to the apostles and others and spoke of things about the Kingdom and then left again. Jesus Christ ascended visibly on the fortieth day. Jesus Christ was presented to the Ancient of Days and received dominion and glory and a kingdom. Jesus Christ led captivity captive and received gifts for men so that the Lord God might dwell among them. Jesus Christ gave gifts to men including the Holy Spirit which He poured out after He sat down at the right hand of God. Jesus Christ sat down at the right hand of God and was enthroned. Jesus Christ was given the place of honor at the Father's right hand and rules with Him. Jesus Christ waits at the Father's right hand until His enemies are made His footstool. Jesus Christ is both King and Priest on His throne. Jesus Christ is the High Priest who passed through the heavens and entered the heavenly Most Holy Place with His own blood. Jesus Christ is the Head of the church and governs the church according to what is good in His sight. Jesus Christ is far above all principality and power and all angels and authorities and powers are subject to Him. Jesus Christ is the Heir of all things. Jesus Christ is the Messenger the Creator the Sustainer and the Advocate and Intercessor who works continually on behalf of those who are His. Jesus Christ is the author of eternal salvation. Jesus Christ is the Lamb who is worthy to take the scroll and redeem all things.

Hebrews (Part Four): Who Was Jesus?

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Jesus Christ stands as a unique and unparalleled figure, great above all others who have ever lived, embodying characteristics of immense love and humility. He possessed the intellectual powers to design and bring into existence the vast creation, populating it with stars, planets, angels, humans, animals, fish, and birds. Despite humanity's unworthiness, He willingly took on the responsibility to pay for our sins through His divine life, ultimately sacrificing Himself in death. He reveals the Father to us, an essential role without which we would not know the Father. He lives in us, works in us, directs us, and teaches us, being all in all to us. As the Word became flesh, He assumed human nature while remaining God, never ceasing to be divine even in the grave and after resurrection. He experienced human dependencies and emotions, yet remained a perfect blend of divine and human, capable of death when He chose to give Himself over to it. As our connection to eternity, He is vital to our spiritual progress. He exemplified a way of life through His interactions, teaching His disciples in real-life situations, and demonstrating the utmost love by sacrificing His life. He continues to guide spiritually from heaven, overseeing the development of His teachings into what we now recognize as essential writings. His role as High Priest is affirmed through His qualifications: He is the only begotten Son, appointed Heir of all things, Creator of all, the brightness of God's glory, the express image of God's person, the upholder of the universe by His power, the purger of our sins, and now re-established at the right hand of God, second only to the Father in rulership, faithfully working to prepare us for His Kingdom.

Hebrews (Part Five): Who Was Jesus?

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Jesus Christ serves as the centerpiece of the epistle to the Hebrews. Jesus Christ functions as High Priest and Mediator. Jesus Christ acts as captain of salvation, leading in obedience to the Father, in the suffering of His office to achieve God's glory, and in His example of both living and teaching the way of glory into God's Kingdom. Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God. Jesus Christ is appointed Heir of all things. Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things and the giver to all living the life that they possess. Jesus Christ is the brightness of God's glory and the express image of His person. Jesus Christ upholds all things in the universe by the word of His power. Jesus Christ purged sins. Jesus Christ is positioned at the right hand of God in rulership. Jesus Christ is the vine to which believers are connected. Jesus Christ is the Builder of the house. Jesus Christ reveals the Father. Jesus Christ carries out responsibilities given to Him in the administration of creation. Jesus Christ faithfully manages and preserves the creation.

Because Jesus is God's Son, we can avoid the rod of His anger by paying respect with worshipful awe. We must know both His instruction and Him personally.

All in All (Part 1)
