Sermon: Hebrews (Part Seven): Greater Than Angels

Given 17-Aug-19; 63 minutes

description: (hide)

God communicated to Adam and Eve, to the patriarchs and prophets, through angelic messengers, and finally through His Son. The book of Hebrews establishes Christ's irrefutable credentials to be Our Messiah and High Priest, identifying Him as (1) the Son of God, (2) the heir of all things, (3) the actual Creator, (4) the brightness of God's glory, (5) the One upholding all things by the Word of His power, (6) the One who has purged us of our sins, and (7) the One sitting at the right hand of the Father. The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers, who murdered the Owner's servants and then His Heir (Matthew 21), depicts the rejection of Jesus Christ by the Jewish leadership. The communication by prophets was purposely halted because (1) all were beset by spiritual weaknesses, (2) even though they possessed speaking authority, their power came from God, (3) all of them were sinful men, (4) not one single prophet grasped the full import of the delivered message, (5) they had no understanding of the Gospel, (6) they were only witnesses, not authors of the message, and (7) Jesus had none of these shortcomings. The Father-Son aspect of the Deity appears in numerous Old Testament passages and should not have taken the Jewish leadership aback. The Book of Hebrews systematically proves Christ's superiority to patriarchs, prophets, the Levitical Priesthood, and angels.
